Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. (1858 - 1919) Theodore Roosevelt once said his father, a strong and healthy philanthropist, was the best man he ever knew. Young Theodore, on the other hand, suffered from asthma and poor eyesight. He remembered his father "walking up and down the room with me in his arms at night, when I was a very small person, and of sitting up in bed gasping" with his parents trying to help him. Born October 27, 1858, Theodore had a bent for science. He collected bugs, mammals and birds, and soon began lifting weights to improve his strength and health. At thirteen he took taxidermy lessons from a man once an associate of Audobon's. His father gave him his first gun in 1872 and hunting soon became a passion, one of many to follow. Roosevelt eventually graduated from Harvard, married Alice Hathaway Lee and studied law for two years at Columbia University in New York. In 1882, when he was elected assemblyman of New York's 21st District, he began writing and developed a deep interest in history. But tragedy struck in 1884. After receiving word his wife had just given birth to a baby girl, he returned home to find both Alice and his mother dying. Roosevelt drew a large cross in his diary for February 14, 1884 (Valentine's Day) and wrote beneath: "The light has gone out of my life."

The life of Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) was one of constant activity, immense energy, and enduring accomplishments. As the twenty-sixth President of the United States, Roosevelt was the wielder of the Big Stick, the builder of the Panama Canal, an avid conservationist, and the nemesis of the corporate trusts that threatened to monopolize American business at the start of the century. His exploits as a Rough Rider in the Spanish-American War and as a cowboy in the Dakota Territory were indicative of his spirit of adventure and love of the outdoors. Reading and hunting were lifelong passions of his; writing was a lifelong compulsion. Roosevelt wrote more than three dozen books on topics as different as naval history and African big game. Whatever his interest, he pursued it with extraordinary zeal. "I always believe in going hard at everything," he preached time and again. This was the basis for living what he called the "strenuous life," and he exhorted it for both the individual and the nation. Roosevelt's engaging personality enhanced his popularity. Aided by scores of photographers, cartoonists, and portrait artists, his features became symbols of national recognition; mail addressed only with drawings of teeth and spectacles arrived at the White House without delay. TR continued to be newsworthy in retirement, especially during the historic Bull Moose campaign of 1912, while pursuing an elusive third presidential term. He remains relevant today. This exhibition is a retrospective look at the man and his portraiture, whose progressive ideas about social justice, representative democracy, and America's role as a world leader have significantly shaped our national character.

tiring campaign
Roosevelt ran for President in 1912, as a third-party candidate. There were suspicions that the strain of the campaign was proving too much for Roosevelt. His voice was bothering him seriously. Reports reached the Bull Moose headquarters that he was losing his grip, that he was repeating himself disastrously. He was forced to cancel two addresses scheduled for the Middle West because of his throat. The disability was bad enough to raise the possibility that he could speak no more. [ Roosevelt did not like to speak in the open air, for it put too much of a strain on his voice. [
