, politician. Ross, a Republican senator from Kansas, opposed President Andrew Johnson but joined with six other Republicans and the Democrats to vote against Johnson's removal from office during the impeachment trial of 1868. By supposedly withholding the last unknown swing vote until voting took place at the trial, Ross wrecked his political career.

The U.S. Federal Census of 1860 gives the white population as 31,443,790, and the black population as 4,441,790; free blacks 488,000; the over-65 population is 2.7 percent of the total (849,000); there are 1.3 million German immigrants in the U.S.; American cotton production is 4.5 million bales, up from 3000 in 1790. The population of New York City is 805,000. Mechanization of agriculture causes a billion acres of land to come under cultivation worldwide by 1920, and another billion by 1980 - too bad it's too late for the American South to divest itself of slavery gracefully. The Second Maori War with the British in New Zealand begins in Feb. (ends 1861). The Pony Express begins service between Sacramento and Saint Joseph on Apr. 3 (ends Oct. 24, 1861). Smallpox epidemic in Pennsylvania (ends 1861). On Feb. 27 beardless Abraham Lincoln gives a speech at the Cooper Union in New York City, followed by a speech on Mar. 6 in New Haven , Connecticut, establishing him as a viable candidate for the Republican presidential nomination . The Democratic Party Convention opens in Charleston on Apr. 23, then splits on May 23 into northern and southern sections; the northern section holds its convention in Baltimore on June 18, nominating Illinois Senator

Rose Hill, Kansas In a single act of amazing courage, Brother Edmund G. Ross preserved the American system of constitutional government.
True courage is an attribute mustered by individuals during moments of crisis. A courageous act is made without weighing its popularity or unpopularity. Instead, it relies solely on the belief that the act must be done because it is the right thing to do. In all cases, courage is being brave enough to take a stand, regardless of the outcome, regardless of potential praise or criticism. Bro. Edmund G. Ross was born December 7, 1826, in Ashland, Ohio, and he first learned the printing trade. He worked at newspapers in Ohio and then at the Sentinel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Later, he published the Tribune in Topeka, Kansas, where he was a member of Topeka Masonic Lodge No. 17. Finally, he established the Kansas State Record. Attaining the rank of Major in the Union Army during the Civil War, he was appointed in 1866 to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy caused by the untimely death of Senator Jim Lane. Brother Ross was a promoter and director of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. It was given its name at his suggestion. The eastern hub of that railroad was where Brother Ross prospered as a young man. The western hub marked his final days.

History of Edmund Gibson Ross Edmund Gibson Ross
Edmund G. Ross was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1866 to fill a vacancy of the untimely death of Senator Jim Lane. He is mainly remembered for casting the tie breaking vote that changed whether President Andrew Johnson would remain in office. President Andrew Johnson was in the process of being impeached when Edmund G. Ross casted his vote. From that moment forward his impartial vote of "Not Guilty" and saving president Andrew Johnson from being impeached secured his place in history.
When Edmund G. Ross was not elected to a full Senate term in 1871 he returned to his home in Kansas. Upon returning he found that many people were still hostile toward him and his family because of his not guilty vote. He left Kansas and moved to New Mexico where he became Territorial Governor from 1885 to 1889. After completing that term of office he became Secretary of the U.S. Bureau of Immigration from 1894 to 1896.
Edmund G. Ross died eleven years later on May 8, 1907 at the age of 80. His life was filled with many accomplishment and courageous acts. His life is a reminder that at any moment our values can be called upon and its outcome can change our life forever.

The Mexican territory of New Mexico was occupied by the U.S. in 1846 and formally ceded by Mexico in 1848 by the Treaty of Guadelupe-Hidalgo. After a period of military rule it was organized as an U.S. Territory in 1850. (1) (1) The territory was enlarged in 1853 following a readjustment of its southern frontier.
