Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
Snowdrops Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the central figure of the Pre-Raphaelites . Together with Holman Hunt and Millais , he started the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the 'poetic inspiration' of the movement. He later was the centre of a new group of Pre-Raphaelite inspired painters, tempting the young Burne Jones and William Morris to become artists. He was born in London, son of Gabriele Rossetti, who had come to England in 1824 and was professor of Italian at King's College, London. His brother, William Michael Rossetti, became an eminent art critic, and he had two artistic sisters, Maria and Christina. After studying at Sass's drawing academy for four years, in 1846 Rossetti was enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools. However, impatience with the restrictive methods and slow pace of the Academy regime lead him to abandon his studies there, and he then worked for a period under Ford Madox Brown . In 1848 he met Holman Hunt, and they shared a studio together for a time. Through Hunt, Rossetti became acquainted with Millais, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was born in that year.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (British, 1828-1882) Browse Paintings List Available Paintings View Available Prints Biography
Dante Gabriel Rossetti was undoubtedly the most inspired of the Pre-Raphaelites, with his personal vision of the medieval world of the Arthurian legends which he painted with an intensity never before seen in art, with the exception perhaps of the visionary paintings of William Blake.
Albumen print by Lewis Carroll, taken at Tudor House, 16 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, October 1863.
From left to right: DG Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, Mrs Rossetti, William Rossetti The circumstances that surrounded the death of Elizabeth Siddal have never been fully explained, although it has been claimed that Rossetti drove her to her death. A red-haired beauty, she was first his model and then his mistress before she became his wife. She was then forced to play the role of an unattainable goddess while Rossetti associated with prostitutes in private. His love for Elizabeth was genuine enough, but it was rooted in a form of high romanticism which had little to do with everyday living. When he confessed to her that the intense love he felt for her would become even stronger if she were to die, she took him at his word. Trapped in an unreal world of romantic passion, she made her escape by taking an overdose of laudanum. She was only 31. Rossetti was prostrate with grief at the funeral. In a gesture worthy of the final scene in some grand opera, he placed a copy of all his unpublished poems in her coffin – only to have them retrieved some years later and sent to the printers for publication. Despite all his talk of everlasting love for Elizabeth, he later had a long-standing affair with Jane Morris, the wife of William Morris.

Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
painter, poet england 12 May 1828, London: 38 Charlotte Street - 9 Apr 1882, Birchington-on-Sea, Kent
Real name: Rosetti, Gabriel Charles Dante
Grave location: Birchington, Kent: All Saints' Churchyard
Son of Gabriele Rossetti and Frances Polidori. He spoke fluently Italian as well as English and was educated at King's College School (1837-1842), F.S. Cary's Academy of Art (1842-1846) and the Royal Academy Antique School. In 1847 he left school to concentrate on art. He sent a fan letter to Ford Madox Brown, whom he admired much. Brown thought Rossetti was being sarcastic and went to the Rossetti family home to give him a sound trashing. There he found to his surprise that Rossetti was absolutely sincere. Brown became Rossetti's mentor and their friendship lasted for life.
When he was only eighteen Rossetti wrote his poem "The Blessed Damozel", which stresses the importance of human love. In 1848 he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with William Holman Hunt, John Millais, James Collinson, Thomas Woolner, Frederic Stephen and his brother William Rossetti. They published "The Germ", a platform for their poetry and other art. In 1849 he first exhibited an important painting, "The Girlhood of Mary Virgin" (now at the Tate Gallery, London).
In 1850 he met Lizzie Siddal, one of the models for the pre-raphaelite painters. She became his pupil as well as his lover and also an important source of inspiration. In 1851 they became engaged.

Biography
12 May 1828, London - 9 April 1882, Birchington-on-Sea Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born into a scholarly and talented family. His father was an exiled Italian patriot and Dante scholar. His sister, Christina, was a poet. Rossetti excelled as both a painter and poet - he once described a picture as a 'painted poem'. At 13 he entered Sass's Academy in preparation for the Royal Academy Schools. Tired of the Academy's methods he served briefly as a pupil of Ford Madox Brown . He became friends with Holman Hunt on admiring his Eve of St Agnes in 1848. Rossetti was the stimulating and charismatic force behind the Brotherhood. He was largely responsible for their magazine, The Germ.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882): An Introduction
George P. Landow, Professor of English and Art History, Brown University
ompared to his more prolific contemporaries, like Browning, Tennyson, and Morris, Rossetti wrote little poetry. His comparative paucity of output is due in large part both to his turning away from poetry for long periods while he worked on his painting and to his habit of reworking the same poems. Even so, one finds difficult summarizing Rossetti's career without distorting it, for although after his first years as a poet he in fact devoted much of his poetic energies to lyrics and the sonnets in The House of Life , he did produce several fine dramatic monologues, satirical poems, and exercises in Neomedievalism. The experimentation with conventional meaning and symbol that distinguishes Tennyson's "The Kraken" and Browning's "Prophyria's Lover" appears in a different form in Rossetti's "The Woodspurge" (1870) which, like "The Blessed Damozel" (1850), presents commonplace symbols and associations only to show that they have no meaning and that no longer do we live in the world of the Divina Commedia a world of divinely ordained analogies and hierarchies. The tension between a daring poetry suited for a bleak, opaque world and one employing traditional forms of symbolism, including

Silent Noon
The Woodspurge
Silent Noon
Your hands lie open in the long fresh grass, Your finger-points look through like rosy blooms: Your eyes smile peace. The pasture gleams and glooms 'Neath billowing skies that scatter and amass. All round our nest, far as the eye can pass, 5 Are golden kingcup-fields with silver edge Where the cow-parsley skirts the hawthorn-hedge. 'Tis visible silence, still as the hour-glass. Deep in the sun-searched growths the dragon-fly Hangs like a blue thread loosened from the sky: 10 So this wing'd hour is dropt to us from above. Oh! clasp we to our hearts, for deathless dower, This close-companioned inarticulate hour When twofold silence was the song of love.
"House of Life" Ballads and Sonnets
The Woodspurge
The wind flapped loose, the wind was still, Shaken out dead from tree and hill: I had walked on at the wind's will, I sat now, for the wind was still. Between my knees my forehead was, 5 My lips, drawn in, said not Alas! My hair was over in the grass, My naked ears heard the day pass. My eyes, wide open, had the run Of some ten weeds to fix upon; 10 Among those few, out of the sun, The woodspurge flowered, three cups in one. From perfect grief there need not be Wisdom or even memory: One thing then learnt remains to me, 15 The woodspurge has a cup of three.
