    A Sonnet
    A Sonnet is a moment's monument,
    Memorial from the Soul's eternity
    To one dead deathless hour. Look that it be,
    Whether for lustral rite or dire portent,
    Of its own arduous fulness reverent:
    Carve it in ivory or in ebony,
    As Day or Night may rule; and let Time see
    Its flowering crest impearled and orient.
    A Sonnet is a coin: its face reveals
    The soul,its converse, to what Power 'tis due:
    Whether for tribute to the august appeals
    Of Life, or dower in Love's high retinue,
    It serve, or, 'mid the dark wharf's cavernous breath,
    In Charon's palm it pay the toll to Death.
    The Kiss
    What smouldering senses in death's sick delay
    Or seizure of malign vicissitude
    Can rob this body of honour, or denude

    Rossetti, Dante Gabriel, eigentlich Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti Englischer Maler und Dichter, Mitbegründer und Hauptvertreter der Bruderschaft der Präraffaeliten Rossetti wurde am 12. Mai 1828 in London als Sohn des aus Italien stammenden Dichters Gabriele Rossetti geboren und besuchte das King's College und die Royal Academy in London Mit den Akademiekollegen John Everett Millais und Holman Hunt gründete er 1848 die Bruderschaft der Präraffaeliten . Diese Vereinigung von Malern und Kritikern strebte eine Reform der Kunst durch eine teils religiös gefärbte Rückbesinnung auf das Mittelalter an und wurde zu einer der bedeutendsten Bewegungen im England des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts. Nach einer Phase didaktisch-religiös geprägter Malerei ( "Ecce Ancilla Domini" Tate Gallery , London ) wandte Rossetti sich der Illustration literarischer Texte zu und schuf u. a. Aquarelle und Zeichnungen zu Dantes "Göttlicher Komödie" und Malorys "Le Morte d'Arthur" . Thematisch und stilistisch knüpfte hieran eine Bilderfolge zur "Artussage" (1856-1858) an. Diese eher dekorative Malweise wich in den sechziger Jahren einer ästhetisch verfeinerten Darstellung bevorzugt literarischer Stoffe, deren schwingende Linienführung bereits Elemente des

    The blessed damozel lean'd out
    From the gold bar of Heaven;
    Her eyes were deeper than the depth
    Of waters still'd at even;
    She had three lilies in her hand,
    And the stars in her hair were seven. Her robe, ungirt from clasp to hem,
    No wrought flowers did adorn,
    But a white rose of Mary's gift,
    For service meetly worn;
    Her hair that lay along her back Was yellow like ripe corn. Her seem'd she scarce had been a day One of God's choristers; The wonder was not yet quite gone From that still look of hers; Albeit, to them she left, her day Had counted as ten years. (To one, it is ten years of years. . . . Yet now, and in this place, Surely she lean'd o'er me"her hair Fell all about my face . . . Nothing: the autumn-fall of leaves.

    Sonnet XXIII, Love's Baubles
    by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
    I stood where Love in brimming armfuls bore
    Slight wanton flowers and foolish toys of fruit:
    And round him ladies thronged in warm pursuit,
    Fingered and lipped and proffered the strange store.
    And from one hand the petal and the core
    Savoured of sleep; and cluster and curled shoot
    Seemed from another hand like shame's salute,-
    Gifts that I felt my cheek was blushing for. At last Love bade my Lady give the same:
    And as I looked, the dew was light thereon;
    And as I took them, at her touch they shone With inmost heaven-hue of the heart of flame. And then Love said: "Lo! when the hand is hers, Follies of love are love's true ministers." Our Services Translation Transcription Interpreting Conference Services ... Litigation Support Search Our Site-

    Rossetti, Dante Gabriel (1828-1882)
    Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born in London, England on May 12, 1828 and died on Easter Day, April 9, 1882. He spent his entire working life in or near the city of his birth, leaving England only three times. Though his work is steeped in Italian traditions, Rossetti never visited Italy. His father was the celebrated Dante scholar and Italian political exile Gabriele Rossetti. His mother, Frances Polidori, was much younger than her husband but also came from a dintinguished and literary family.
    Rossetti showed talent even at a young age in writing and painting. He went to Sass's Drawing School in 1841; and in 1845, transferred to the Antique School of the Royal Academy. In 1848, he dropped out of school altogether. But it was an important year that would produce his first important painting as well as some of his literary writings. When he left the school, he apprenticed himself for a short time to Ford Madox Brown. At the 1848 Royal Academy Exhibition, he became enthralled by William Holman Hunt's "Eve of St. Agnes" and struck up a friendship with the painter. He moved in with him and worked under Hunt's supervision to finish his first important painting, "The Girlhood of Mary Virgin" and to create the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

In 1857, while working on the project to paint the walls of the Debating Hall of the Union Society in Oxford, he met some of his greatest friends, including Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, and Charles Algernon Swinburne. Two other projects of these years were also important. In 1856, William Morris and his friends published

    Introduction W.H. Hunt J.E. Millais D.G. Rossetti Pre-Raphaelite Followers Pre-Raphaelite Successors References and Related Sites Home T he English son of an Italian poet and revolutionary, Dante Gabrielle Rossetti is often considered one of the most prominent and influential artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Many admirers, past and present, believe that Rossetti's life and career as an artist and poet have come to symbolize the principles embraced by followers the Pre-Raphaelite Movement-revolution, romanticism and artistic reformation. His brother, William Michael (an elected member of the "PRB") would serve as the society's chronicler and his poet sister, Christina Rosetti , was also closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. A s a student of the Royal Academy, Rossetti had difficulty in mastering the depiction of classical forms, proportion and perspective (the fundamental elements of Renaissance art). Later, this shortcoming would be conceptually and technically adapted as an "artistic alternative" in painting styles typically seen in the works of Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelites. In addition to painting religious subjects, Rossetti often looked to romantic poets and authors for inspiraton, frequently basing pictures on the literary works of his namesake, 13th century Italian poet Dante Alighieri Please note: Some full size images are large (50KB+)

    English poet and painter who was a leading member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood devoted to reviving English art through medieval inspiration . He was strongly attracted to the dramatic and the supernatural, both of which are represented in his work. Among his earliest paintings was a scene of the annunciation, Ecce Ancilla Domini (The Annunciation, 1850, Tate Gallery, London ). His art subsequently developed through other phases, in which the sense of human beauty, intensity of abstract expression, and richness of color were leading elements. Rossetti encouraged fellow Pre-Raphaelites William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones after they left Oxford, improving their technique and unleashing their creativity. Sorrow and depression, relieved only by his creative outlets, marred Rossetti's later years. In 1860 he had married a milliner, Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, whose beauty he immortalized in many of his best-known paintings, such as "Mary Magdalene" at the "House of Simon the Pharisee" (1858, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge). Within two years Elizabeth died, and Rossetti was grief stricken by the tragedy. In addition, he was troubled by a bitter attack that had been made on the morality of his poems in an article entitled "The Fleshy School of Poetry," published in The Contemporary Review in October 1871. Rossetti's rebuttal was published as "The Stealthy School of Criticism" in the Athenaeum in December 1871.

    He was born Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti in London on May 12, 1828, son of the Italian-born poet Gabriele Rossetti. He was educated there at King's College and the Royal Academy. At the academy he met the painters Sir John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt, with whom he founded the "Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood". Rossetti was strongly attracted to the dramatic and the supernatural. Among his earliest paintings was a scene of the annunciation, "Ecce Ancilla Domini". His art subsequently developed through other phases, in which the sense of human beauty, intensity of abstract expression, and richness of color were leading elements. Rossetti began writing poetry about the same time that he took to the study of painting. One of his best-known poems, "The Blessed Damozel", was written in 1842. He also made a number of translations from Dante and other Italian writers. Rossetti's later years were marred by sorrow and mental depression. In 1860 he had married a milliner , Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, whom he had been courting for years. He immortalized her beauty in many of his best-known paintings, such as "Regina Cordium". Within two years the invalid Elizabeth died of a laudanum overdose, and Rossetti was grief stricken by the tragedy. In addition he was troubled by a bitter attack that had been made on the morality of his poems in an article entitled "The Fleshy School of Poetry," published in The Contemporary Review in October 1871. Rossetti's rebuttal was published as "The Stealthy School of Criticism" in the Athenaeum in December 1871.

    Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
    Rossetti was a key figure in the founding of the Pre-Raphaelites and was the 'poetic inspiration' behind the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He tempted the young Burne Jones and William Morris to become artists. Rossetti was born in London, and was the son of Gabriele Rossetti, who had come to England in 1824 and was Professor of Italian at King's College, London. Rossetti had a brother, William Michael, who became an eminent art critic, and two artistic sisters, Maria and Christina. Christina Rossetti became an accomplished poet. Rossetti attended the Royal Academy then worked for a time under Ford Madox Brown . He stopped exhibiting at the Royal Academy after only a few pictures for he soon built up a reputation and had many private patrons. As well as a painter, he designed for Morris's company. He was a capable illustrator and worked on the Moxton Tennyson and for the Kelmscott press. Like many artists of the time, Rossetti was to illustrate Christina Rosetti's famous poem The Goblin Market . He was also an accomplished poet. Rossetti's paintings are distinguished by his eye for beauty, choice of subjects, a dreamlike quality and intensity of vision. He was an ether addict and this may explain the dream like renditions. In his early years he painted many pictures on the theme of Dante and Beatrice, and chose other subjects from Italian history and Arthurian tales.
