Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
Silent Noon
Your hands lie open in the long fresh grass, The finger-points look through like rosy blooms: Your eyes smile peace. The pasture gleams and glooms 'Neath billowing skies that scatter and amass. All round our nest, far as the eye can pass, Are golden kingcup-fields with silver edge Where the cow-parsley skirts the hawthorn-hedge. 'Tis visible silence, still as the hour-glass. Deep in the sun-searched growths the dragon-fly Hangs like a blue thread loosened from the sky: So this wing'd hour is dropt to us from above. Oh! clasp we to our hearts, for deathless dower, This close-companioned inarticulate hour When twofold silence was the song of love.

Rosetti was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In fact, his Girlhood of Mary the Virgin was the first painting to bear the mysterious initials "PRB" after the signature in 1849. It was not until a year later that Rosetti made public the meaning of the initials at which time a firestorm of controversy erupted in which Rosetti and his fellow Pre-Raphaelites were accused of being romanists, blasphemers, atheists, and worse, most notably in a rather shoddy and vicious attack by Dickens on Milais's Christ in the House of his Parents. Most of his early works featured Elizabeth Siddal (who also posed for Millais and Hunt) whom he married in 1860. Two years later she died of an apparently suicidal overdose of laudanum and Rosetti became a virtual recluse and chloral hydrate addict. He was overcome with grief and guilt over having not been attentive enough to his wife and at the funeral he placed the only copy of his complete works of poetry in the coffin with her (in emulation of a story written by his sister Christina Rosetti some 12 years earlier). After Elizabeth's death, his principal subject was William Morris's wife Jane whose full-lipped sultry beauty has become most associated with his name and which generated significant criticism at the time. In 1870 after much soul-searching he had the body of of Elizabeth exhumed to retrieve his book of poetry, much of which was subsequently published. He died 12 years later in 1882 at a resort near Margate in Kent.

P re-Raphaelite Brotherhood - A group of English artists which formed an association in 1848 to recapture the beauty and simplicity of the medieval world. Their painting style and art movement reacted to the sterility of English art, along with the materialism resulting from England's industrialization. They identified Raphael (Italian, 1483-1520) with the scientific interests of Renaissance art, which they felt had led to modern technological development. They aimed to study nature , to sympathize with what is direct, serious and heartfelt in earlier art, and to infuse their works with literary symbolism , bright colors , and attention to detail The founders of the Brotherhood were the painters Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) [a photo of him by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll, English mathematician and writer, author of Alice In Wonderland , as well as photographer, 1832-1898), 1863], William Holman Hunt (1827-1910), John Everett Millais (1829-1896), James Collinson (1825-1881), Frederic George Stephens (1828-1907), sculptor Thomas Woolner (1825-1892), and writer William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919), the painter's brother.

http://www.francescomorante.it/pag_3/302f.htm

Title of Work Retro me Sathana Alternative Title Get Behind Me Satan Date Artist Rossetti, Dante Gabriel Charles (1828-1882) Type drawing Medium Dimensions 24.1cms x 17.5cms Category narrative Notes Rossetti’s work was often informed by literary sources, and he frequently depicted scenes from the works of favourite authors. Here the scene probably derives from Goethe’s Faust , in which Satan covertly watches Margaret and her confessor. The date of this composition is of some significance, coming as it does between Rossetti leaving the Royal Academy in March 1848, and being a founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in September of the same year. It is highly finished and demonstrates the artist’s bold innovations in composition and design, which later proved to be such a characteristic feature of his mature work. Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the central figure of the Pre-Raphaelites. Together with Holman Hunt and Millais, he started the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the 'poetic inspiration' of the movement. He later was the centre of a new group of Pre-Raphaelite inspired painters, tempting the young Burne Jones and William Morris to become artists.
He was born in London, son of Gabriele Rossetti, who had come to England in 1824 and was professor of Italian at King's College, London. His brother, William Michael Rossetti, became an eminent art critic, and he had two artistic sisters, Maria and Christina.
After studying at Sass's drawing academy for four years, in 1846 Rossetti was enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools. However, impatience with the restrictive methods and slow pace of the Academy regime lead him to abandon his studies there, and he then worked for a period under Ford Madox Brown. In 1848 he met Holman Hunt, and they shared a studio together for a time. Through Hunt, Rossetti became acquainted with Millais, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was born in that year.
In 1849, Elizabeth Siddal came into Rossetti's life, having been introduced into the Pre-Raphaelite circle by Walter Howard Deverell. She became the model for most of Rossetti's completed pictures from this date through to her death, as well as the subject of a large number of drawings. They finally married only in 1860, and she died 2 years later. Other models used by Rossetti were Fanny Cornforth, Fanny Wilding, Marie Spartali, and, dominating as much in his later work as Elizabeth Siddall did in his early work, Jane Morris (nee Jane Burden).
