82. Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 — 1882)
Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 — 1882). The Blessed Damozel. The blessed damozellean'd out. From the gold bar of Heaven;. Her eyes were deeper than the depth.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 — 1882) The Blessed Damozel The blessed damozel lean'd out From the gold bar of Heaven; Her eyes were deeper than the depth Of waters still'd at even; 5 She had three lilies in her hand, And the stars in her hair were seven. Her robe, ungirt from clasp to hem, No wrought flowers did adorn, But a white rose of Mary's gift, 10 For service meetly worn; Her hair that lay along her back Was yellow like ripe corn. Her seem'd she scarce had been a day One of God's choristers; 15 The wonder was not yet quite gone From that still look of hers; Albeit, to them she left, her day Had counted as ten years. (To one, it is ten years of years. 20 . . . Yet now, and in this place, Surely she lean'd o'er me—her hair Fell all about my face .... Nothing: the autumn-fall of leaves. The whole year sets apace.) 25 It was the rampart of God's house That she was standing on; By God built over the sheer depth The which is Space begun; So high, that looking downward thence 30 She scarce could see the sun. It lies in Heaven, across the flood Of ether, as a bridge.

Although the movement started to lose its attraction by the mid-1850s, new disciples Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris brought with them fresh enthusiasm. Rossetti's poems are distinguished by fantasy, leading the reader to times past, to medieval colour, Arthurian legend, and Dantesque mysticism. I have been here before,
But when or how I cannot tell;
I know the grass beyond the door,
The sweet keen smell,
The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.

(from 'Sudden Light', 1881) For many years Rossetti was known only as a painter. On the other hand he had to face for some time the problem that his paintings were not bought. He idealized his subjects, and used literary themes of medieval romances. His early poems, such as 'The Blessed Damozel', a highly symbolic work, and 'My Sister's Sleep', in which death visits a family on a Christmas Eve, were published in Pre-Raphaelite magazine The Germ in 1850. "I said, "Full knowledge does not grieve: / This which upon my spirit dwells / Perhaps would have been sorrow else: / But I am glad 'tis Christmas Eve."

Dante Gabriel Rossetti A Brief Biography. Dante Gabriel Rossetti was bornin London on 12 May 1828 and he died on Easter Day, 9 April 1882.
http://www.iath.virginia.edu/rossetti/dgrbio.html
Dante Gabriel Rossetti: A Brief Biography Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born in London on 12 May 1828 and he died on Easter Day, 9 April 1882. He spent nearly his entire working life in the city of his birth, and indeed he only left Great Britain three times, in each case but the first quite briefly. Though his work is steeped in Italian traditions (both poetical and pictorial), DGR never visited Italy. He is first and always an English more, a London writer and artist. His father was the celebrated (and controversial) Dante scholar and Italian political exile Gabriele Rossetti. His mother Frances, much younger than her husband, was Anglo-Italian Polidori on her father's side. (Her grandfather, Dr. John Polidori, was Byron's doctor and companion during the first part of his exile from England in 1816.) DGR had three siblings, two younger than himself. All were remarkable. His sister Christina became as distinguished a poet as her brother. His brother William Michael, a writer himself, edited his brother's work after the latter's death and served as the first archivist and historian of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. His other sister was the oldest child, Maria Francesca; she published a commentary on Dante and became an Anglican nun. DGR's interests in writing and painting appeared early, encouraged by his immediate family life as well as by the literary interests of his grandfather Polidori. The children were writing in the early 1840s and DGR was also beginning to draw and paint. He went to Sass's drawing school in 1841 and in 1845 moved to the Antique School of the Royal Academy. He did not work well under academic tutelage, however, and in 1848 he dropped away from school altogether.

Victorian Art in Britain Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Dante Gabriel Rossetti 1828-1882 Rossetti was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the soul and main intellectual force of the whole movement. He must have been a fascinating individual, who was the inspiration for the whole of the second generation of the movement, and was the artistic mentor of the young Burne-Jones and William Morris. I have felt for a considerable time that the biography on VAB of Rossetti is grossly inadequate, and this replacement represents an attempt to address its shortcomings. Biography of Rossetti Early Life Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born at Charlotte Street, off Portland Place, London on May 12 th Rossetti senior worked long hours at Kings College, and supplemented his income by private tuition. Neither he, nor his wife socialised outside their home, lacking the necessary income and time. Most evenings there were two or three fellow Italian exiles in the house, and the talk was of art, literature, and primarily politics. Perhaps as a result of this Dante Gabriel Rossetti the adult, was, though enlightened and progressive, disinterested in the specifics of politics. Edward Burne-Jones was similar in his outlook.
