J.M.W.Turner - John Ruskin
Writer, art critic, champion of socialism, John Ruskin put everything he had into his beliefs, including most of his fortune. When his father left him a large sum of money, he gave most of it away to art museums and charities. Ruskin was born in London, England, on Feb. 8, 1819. His father was a wealthy wine merchant, and both of his parents devoted much time to his education. In 1836 he left home to go to Oxford, where he won a prize for poetry. He graduated in 1842. Early in his career Ruskin wrote mostly about painting and architecture. The first volume of his 'Modern Painters' series, published when he was 24, redirected public taste. This series and 'The Seven Lamps of Architecture' and 'The Stones of Venice' gave the people of Queen Victoria's reign a new interest in art and a new point of view toward it. In his later life he was a professor of art at Oxford.

The Romans [ John Ruskin ] Kurt Schwitters Josefina de Vasconcellos Charles Walmsley Fred Yates John Ruskin was the adored child of wealthy parents (his father was a sherry merchant) and was recognised from an early age as a prodigy. He became one of the leading art critics and social commentators of his day, possessing an acute sensitivity and judgement allied to a stern Protestant morality instilled in him by his mother. Ruskin‘s artistic judgement is reflected in his championing of the works of J.W.M.Turner (some of which he bought and hung at Brantwood, his house near Coniston from 1872) and of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, as well as in his architectural criticism. In his Seven Lamps of Architecture Ruskin set out to define seven principles: Sacrifice, Truth, Power, Beauty, Life, Memory and Obedience. In The Stones of Venice he recorded in lyrical prose the architectural decoration that he felt was in danger of extinction. Ruskin believed that the beauty of medieval architecture arose from the pleasure the workman took in his craft, a view which William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement took up and developed.

He began to describe what he thought would be an ideal state of society and how he felt this could be brought about. Ruskin did not champion revolutionary socialism, but he cried out for national education, old-age pensions, and better housing for the working classes. Ruskin's strong feelings about social welfare led him to organize the Guild of St. Georgean elaborate social structure in which machines were practically banished. Even though Ruskin knew comparatively little about sociology or economics, his 'Sesame and Lilies', a popular statement of some of his sociological ideas, became very well known.

John Ruskin by Liz Piandarian Links to Online Resources Books and Articles John Ruskin, born on February 8, 1819, was one of England's most influential thinkers during the Victorian period. His work spans over many subjects, including art, religion, and sociological development. Uniquely, on the issue of work in society, he linked his thoughts on 19th century labor with the identity of the artist, insisting upon a preservation of craftsmanship in all methods of production. This connection between art and society was a tie among many of Ruskin's writings.
John Ruskin, 1819-1900 Raised for a life with the ministry, Ruskin rejected this path after attending Oxford from 1836-40. Family travels during his childhood and adolescence introduced him to the world of art and nature, instilling an excitement for these subjects. His views published in "The Nature of Gothic" in The Stones of Venice (1851-3) connected his flare for art and architecture with his passion for the workman in society. Here, he suggests that all workers be considered artists, encouraging the craftsman to reflect his imagination onto the product. "[T]his is what we have to do with all our labourers; to look for the thoughtful part of them, and get that out of them, whatever we lose for it, whatever faults and errors we are obliged to take with it."

Administrative/Biographical History
John Ruskin was the most influential art critic of the Victorian age. His literary output was enormous and he had a remarkable influence on public opinion. John Ruskin was born in 1819, the only child of John James Ruskin, a wealthy wine merchant and his wife, Margaret. Ruskin remained close to his parents for the rest of their lives. He was much influenced by his mother's strong protestant beliefs, and his father's literary interests. His parents encouraged Ruskin's love of drawing and took him on numerous Continental holidays, which awoke his passionate interest in the natural landscape. He was educated at home, before going to Christ Church, Oxford, where he did not find the curriculum to his taste. In 1843 he published the first volume of Modern Painters (5 volumes 1843-1860), which began as a defence of the artist, J M W Turner, but grew into an exposition of Ruskin's principles of art. He later made an equally passionate defence of the Pre-Raphaelites, who had been initially dismissed by most established critics. Ruskin also had a great interest in medieval architecture. His European travels had introduced him to the architecture of France and northern Italy, and aware of the threat to it from neglect, unsympathetic restoration and modernisation, set out to describe it to his readers in great detail and aesthetic sensitivity. He was a champion of the gothic style, which he expounded in
