John Ruskin John Ruskin, the greatest Victorian bar Victoria, was an artist, scientist, poet, environmentalist, philosopher, and, importantly here, the pre-eminent art critic of his time. He provided the impetus that gained respectability for the Pre-Raphaelites. Ruskin's letter to The Times in 1851, supporting the much-derided Pre-Raphaelites for their naturalism and truth to nature, marked a turning point in their perception by the public. In a second letter, he wrote that the Pre-Raphaelites might "lay the foundation of a school of art nobler than the world has seen for 300 years." When, after this, Ruskin met the Pre-Raphaelites, he encouraged them in their ideals, acting as tutor, mentor, and generous supporter to Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt, as well as later artists in a similar spirit such as John Brett and John William Inchbold. He was a long-time friend of the children's illustrator Kate Greenaway, and also of the bird-painter H. S. Marks. Ruskin taught Pre-Raphaelite style drawing at the Working Men's College in London for some years, enlisting Rossetti to teach figure and watercolor painting, and afterwards Ford Madox Brown to fill the same position. Afterwards, he left London, becoming Slade Professor of Art at Oxford (where there is an art college named after him) and then removing to the Lake District where he helped to start the Environmental Movement.

Ruskin, John Ruskin, John (1819-1900), English writer, art critic, and reformer, a dominant tastemaker among intellectuals of the Victorian period. Ruskin is best known for his monumental studies of architecture and its social and historical implications described in The Seven Lamps of Architecture and its sequel, The Stones of Venice. Ruskin was born February 8, 1819, in London and educated at the University of Oxford. His youthful passions for art, literature, and travel were encouraged by his father, a wealthy merchant. The story of his early years was told by Ruskin himself in his last work, an unfinished autobiography, Praeterita (1885-1889). His main theme, the relationship between art and morality, was first set forth, and his influence as aesthete and art critic established, with the publication in 1843 of the first volume of his Modern Painters. This work was in part a defense of the then-controversial painter J. M. W. Turner. The two books that followed, The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849) and The

The hills in the background "as blue as my shoes" were included at the reqiest of young John, who reportedly felt the "idea of distant hills was commected in my mind with the approach to the extreme felicities of life". It is unclear to HBC why he is holding a blue ribbon. But his mother claerly liked blue sashes and bows, Note the long sash flowing from a bow at his back, bows on his shoulders, and bows on his blue shoes. John Ruskin (England, 1819-1900) John Ruskin was a towering intellect and leading voice in England during the second half of the 19th Century. He was an author, art critic, and reformerone of England's most respected Victorian thinkers. Some have called him the most influentional cultural figure of his day. He had a strict if protected childhood. While HBC at this time has little information on how he was dressed as a child, we do know that he wore dresses as a small boy. Available information, however, provides some fascination insights into child rearing practices in the Victorian era. Parents and Family Background John was the only child of Margaret and John James Ruskin. His father, a prosperous, self-made man who was a founding partner of Pedro Domecq sherries, collected art and encouraged his son's literary activities, while his mother, a devout evangelical Protestant, early dedicated her son to the service of God and devoutly wished him to become an Anglican bishop. In his parents' life the struggle with sin and the struggle with poverty were both won by effort and denial.

He once said Keswick was a place almost too beautiful to live in. The monument is a grade II listed structure. The few square yards round the memorial were the first bit of the Lake District to become property of the National Trust Tourist Information Centre, Moot Hall, Keswick.
