Like many other authors in this exhibit, Sax Rohmer tried many careers before settling on writing. After publishing several short stories, he abandoned fiction writing for a time and tried journalism, illustration, and work as a composer for music halls. Finally, in 1912, he published his first story featuring Fu Manchu, "The Zayat Kiss." It was an immediate success, and Fu Manchu went on to become one of the most famous and widely read series of all time. Most of the stories were published in popular magazines. After concluding one series of the stories in 1918, Rohmer revived the character in the 1930s, and again in the 1950s. Although he created other detective characters and wrote some fantasy fiction, Fu Manchu is clearly his most famous creation. Rohmer died in 1959, of complications from Asian flu. Rohmer, Sax. The Mask of Fu Manchu The Mask of Fu Manchu is bound in yellow cloth, with bold black lettering on the front cover and on the spine. The front cover is simple, with merely the title and Rohmer's name emblazoned in black. The spine also has the title and author, and the publisher, as well as an oriental mask of frightening visage. The dust jacket is splendid. The same mask is held half in front of a woman's face, in lush tones of gold, red and green. The title and author peek out as well from behind the mask.

Indice Umberto Saba Ernesto
    - Cossa el ga? El xe stanco?
    - No. Son rabiado.
Rafael Sabatini Captain Blood
Peter Blood, bachelor of medicine and several other things besides, smoked a pipe and tended the geraniums boxed on the sill of his window above Water Lane in the town of Bridgewater.

He found Patient #1 sitting on the floor, pretending to saw a piece of wood in half. Patient #2 was hanging from the ceiling, by his feet. The doctor asked patient number 1 what he was doing.
The patient replied, "Can't you see I'm sawing this piece of wood in half?"
The doctor inquired of Patient #1 what Patient #2 was doing.
Patient #1 replied, "Oh. He's my friend, but he's a little crazy. He thinks he's a light bulb."
The doctor looks up and notices Patient #2's face is going all red. The doctor asks Patient #1, "If he's your friend, you should get him down from there before he hurts himself"
Patient #1 replies, "What? And work in the dark?"

June 16 Can anyone tell me something about the following titles? Some are from the Nautical Fiction List, but lack descriptions or have inadequate ones, others are waiting for a description so they can go into the list, they may not even be nautical or fiction. I try hard not to put anything into the list without a description of some sort, though of course I'm quite imperfect in that regard. Send replies to: jkohnen@boat-links.com Thanks!
