What's New in Eighteenth-Century Resources on the Net
These are the most recent eighteenth-century resources I've discovered; they'll remain here for six months. Simple electronic texts are added to the eighteenth-century E-texts page rather than the main eighteenth-century page.
  • 9 March 2002: This is the first update in far too many months, and includes a great many additions. In the years since I began maintaining this site, the number of literary resources on the Net has grown by many orders of magnitude. What was once a comprehensive list is becoming increasingly selective. I still welcome news of new sites, but it is becoming impossible to include everything.

Memoirs
Louis de Rouvroy, Duke de Saint-Simon (1675-1755), was the godson of Louis XIV. He was brought up in Versailles and had the opportunity to observe first hand the life of the court. His Memoirs are one of our most important sources regarding the everyday life of the French court.
I shall pass over the stormy period of Louis XIV's minority. At twenty-three years of age he entered the great world as King, under the most favorable auspices. His ministers were the most skillful in all Europe; his generals the best; his Court was filled with illustrious and clever men, formed during the troubles which had followed the death of Louis XIII. This poison spread. It spread, too, to an incredible extent, in a prince who, although of intellect beneath mediocrity, was not utterly without sense, and who had had some experience. Without voice or musical knowledge, he use to sing, in private, the passages of the opera prologues that were fullest of his praises! He was drowned in vanity; and so deeply, that at his public suppersall the Court present, musicians alsohe would hum these self-same praises between his teeth, when the music they were set to was played! It was his vanity, his desire for glory, that led him, soon after the death of the King of Spain, to make that event the pretext for war; in spite of renunciations so recently made, so carefully stipulated, in the marriage contract. He marched into Flanders; his conquests there were rapid; the passage of the Rhine was admirable; the triple alliance of England, Sweden, and Holland only animated him. In the midst of winter he took Franche-Comte, by restoring which at the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle, he preserved his conquests in Flanders. All was flourishing then in the state. Riches everywhere. Colbert had placed the finances, the navy, commerce, manufactures, letters even, upon the highest point; and this age, like that of Augustus, produced in abundance illustrious men of all kindseven those illustrious only in pleasures.

The Title of Vidame
The title of vidame is an odd feudal relic, of which a half-dozen examples survived to the end of the French Old Regime.
Origins
In Carolingian times, before the feudal era, important clerics such as bishops and abbots held important estates, but were forbidden by canon law from participating in the judicial and military aspects of life. To take their place, they appointed individuals to protect and manage their temporal interests: the advocati or vicedomini . In the 10th c. these terms are used indifferently, but in the 11th century the term of is reserved for protectors of abbeys, while that of vidame By contrast, the vidames were not prominent lords, and exercised their powers under the close control of the bishop. Originally appointed officers, they became hereditary like all other offices in the feudal system, passing to the eldest son and by default to the eldest daughter (the wife or daughter of a vidame was a vidamesse ). Renunciations to Future Successions in pre-1789 French Law
First published: July 1999.
  • Introduction
  • Renunciations in private law
    Introduction
One of the arguments used by some Legitimists in the dispute over the succession to the French throne, to demonstrate the invalidity of the renunciations made as part of the Treaty of Utrecht to eventual rights of succession, is that renunciations are prohibited, or invalid, or unrecognized in private law. This page gathers evidence that renunciations to future successions did exist in pre-1789 French private law. It also provides the opinions of a number of writers of the 18th century in favor of the validity of renunciations in public law.
    Renunciations in private law
    Analysis
One might doubt whether private law is of any relevance to constitutional law. But there is some merit to the notion that the concept of "renunciation to eventual rights" (as opposed to renunciation to actual rights, that is, abdication) is not a self-evident concept. It is a legal concept that depends on the legal environment. For example, there is no way that anyone in the line of succession to the British throne can renounce his or her rights (although tere are actions that, under the Act of Settlement, may result in deprivation of those rights). In fact, in Britain, a sovereign cannot even abdicate. A law is required to remove him or her (as happened in 1936). Therefore, the validity of concepts like abdication and renunciation depends on the legal system. If renunciations to future successions are prohibited or unrecognized in private law, the appeal to such concepts becomes problematic where constitutional law does not explicitly establish their validity.
