Saki (H.H. Munro) (1870-1916)
Commentary by Karen Bernardo Hector Hugh Munro more commonly known as Saki was born in Akyab, Burma. This was during the period when Burma, like India proper, was occupied by the British, and thus Munro was considered a British citizen despite the location of his birth. Munro’s father was an officer in the Burma police. However, apparently feeling that England was a better place to raise children than Burma, Munro’s father left his three children in the care of his mother and two sisters (the children’s grandmother and aunts) back in Devon, England. Hector Munro and his two siblings were all somewhat sickly children, and out of concern for their health they were tutored at home for much of their childhoods. This focus on home may have contributed to a similar concentration in the drawing-room situations Munro would later describe in his stories. When Hector had completed his schooling, he went to Burma where his father had arranged for him to join the military police. The climate did not agree with him, and after only a year at his new post, he fell ill with a severe case of malaria and had to return home. Back in England he began writing political satires, which were so entertaining that he had no trouble getting them published in the Westminster Gazette . He chose to publish his fiction (as opposed to his journalistic and non-fiction efforts) under the name of Saki, a pseudonym which was taken from the cup-bearer in

by Hector Hugh Munro Saki . Saki was the penname of Hector Hugh Munro (1870-1916),a British political journalist who worked in Russia and France.
http://www.ompersonal.com.ar/shortstories/openwindow.htm
THE OPEN WINDOW by Hector Hugh Munro "Saki" Saki was the pen-name of Hector Hugh Munro (1870-1916) a British political journalist who worked in Russia and France. He published several volumes of short stories which show an understanding of children and of young people who play cleverly and sometimes maliciously on the feelings of their elders.
For Graham Greene, Munro was the best English humourist of the twentieth century. Munro's mother died when he was born, so he was sent to England to be brought up by two maiden old aunts who turned his life into a real misery. Greene states that this unhappy childhood is the key to the cruelty in almost all his short stories. This is the case of THE OPEN WINDOW... The Open Window La Ventana Abierta
'My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel,' said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; 'in the meantime you must try and put up with me.'
Framton Nuttel tried to say a few words which should flatter both the niece of the moment and the aunt that was to come. Privately he doubted more than ever whether these formal visits on a number of total strangers would do much towards helping the nerve cure which he was to undergo.

OYSTERS
"I will not eat oysters. I want my food dead. Not sick, not wounded, dead."
Woody Allen "He was a very valiant man who first adventured on eating of oysters."
James I (Thomas Fuller's "Worthies of England") "He was a bold man that first eat an oyster."
Jonathan Swift, listed as a cliché in "Polite Conversation" Describing Ostend oysters: "small and rich, looking like little ears enfolded in shells, and melting between the palate and the tongue like salted sweets."
Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) 'Bel Ami' "Oysters are more beautiful than any religion....There's nothing in Christianity or Buddhism that quite matches the sympathetic unselfishness of an oyster."
Saki (Hector Hugh Munro) Scottish writer (1870-1916) According to a companion, Thackeray, when presented with a half-dozen 6 to 8 inch oysters common at the time: "He first selected the smallest one...and then bowed his head as though he were saying grace. Opening his mouth very wide, he struggled for a moment, after which all was over. I shall never forget the comic look of despair he cast upon the other five over-occupied shells. I asked him how he felt. 'Profoundly grateful,' he said, 'as if I had swallowed a small baby.'"
William Makepeace Thackeray (1852) "Why, then the world's mine oyster, Which I with sword will open."

    http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/maser.html
"A little inaccuracy sometimes saves tons of explanation."
    H. H. Munro ("Saki") (1870-1916)
The USNO Reference System #2 (Master Clock #2) is a hydrogen maser, built by Datum, Inc. of Beverly, Massachusetts. Masers are atomic clocks which have outstanding short-term stability. USNO's current Sigma Tau -model hydrogen masers [STSC Model 2010] are designed to operate with a maximum frequency instablility
Some of the main components of a hydrogen maser are the hydrogen gas supply , a controllable "leak" for the gas into the high vacuum system , a gas discharge to produce atomic hydrogen, and a state selector which rejects atoms in the lower energy states and focusses the higher states into the storage bulb A small storage bottle supplies molecular hydrogen to the gas discharge bulb. In the discharge bulb, molecules of hydrogen are dissociated into atomic hydrogen. They then pass through a source collimator and a magnetic state selector which filters atoms at the desired atomic state and passes them to the resonance cavity. The storage bulb is a quartz bulb about 20 cm tall which is coated inside with Teflon to control the recombination rate of atoms into molecules. The quartz bulb is located in a precisely machined pure copper cylinder which acts as a microwave resonant cavity for the 1.420 GHz frequency of the 21 cm hydrogen line. Once the atoms enter the resonance cavity, they find other atoms radiating and they fall in step. They "start to talk to each other" and echo what they hear. This produces a highly coherent oscillation. This is the signal to which the crystal oscillator is phase-locked. All of that is packaged in cabinets with power supplies, temperature control, and magnetic shielding.
