Cet idéal la poussa à se battre pour la République. En 1848, elle demanda que des ouvriers et des paysans soient élus au même titre que les autres membres de la société, mais ses amis politiques préférèrent garder le pouvoir pour eux-mêmes ce qui l'a dégoûta à jamais de la politique. Elle écrivit alors ses plus célèbres romans champêtres "La Mare au diable", "La petite Fadette", "François le Champi" afin de relever le peuple à ses propres yeux et de lui donner une mémoire. Dans le même souci de préserver la culture paysanne, elle écrivit "Les Légendes rustiques".
