From: Beautiful Joe: An Autobiography by Margaret Marshall Saunders. Philadelphia: The Griffith and Rowland Press, 1893.
    CHAPTER XIII
    THE BEGINNING OF AN ADVENTURE
THE first winter I was at the Morrises', I had an adventure. It was a week before Christmas, and we were having cold, frosty weather. Not much snow had fallen, but there was plenty of skating, and the boys were off every day with their skates on a little lake near Fairport. Jim and I often went with them, and we had great fun scampering over the ice after them, and slipping at every step. On this Saturday night we had just gotten home. It was quite dark outside, and there was a cold wind blowing, so when we came in the front door, and saw the red light from the big hall stove and the blazing fire in the parlor they looked very cheerful. I was quite sorry for Jim that he had to go out to his kennel. However, he said he didn't mind. The boys got a plate of nice, warm meat for him and a bowl of milk, and carried them out, and afterward he went to sleep. Jim's kennel was a very snug one. Being a spaniel, he was not a very large dog, but his kennel was as roomy as if he was a great Dane. He told me that Mr. Morris and the boys made it, and he liked it very much, because it was large enough for him to get up in the night and stretch himself, when he got tired of lying in one position. It was raised a little from the ground, and it had a thick layer of straw over the floor. Above was a broad shelf, wide enough for him to lie on, and covered with an old catskin sleigh robe. Jim always slept here in cold weather, because it was farther away from the ground.

    The Town of Meaford
In 1839, an Irishman, David Miller, and his family, became the first inhabitants within the present boundaries of Meaford. The Miller cabin on the bank of the Bighead River became a stopping place for new arrivals to the township, and was dubbed "Peggy's Landing" after Mrs. Miller, whose first name was actually Margaret. hen surveyed in 1845, the new village was given the name Meaford, after Meaford Hall, a great house in Staffordshire, England which was the home of Sir John Jervis, the Earl of St. Vincent. Jervis was an illustrious British naval hero, whose title was used in the naming of St. Vincent Twp., which borders Meaford. Meaford's street names also honour early 19th-century British naval heros, namely, Sykes, Boucher, Trowbridge, Collingwood, Parker, Pearson, Berry, Nelson, Noble, Owen, Cook, and Bayfield. The first railway station was on Meaford's "Station Hill" and was built in 1872. Its use was discontinued with the completion of the harbour station. There also was a "Station Hill" elevator, which was dismantled. Meaford had some disastrous fires in the early 1880's which destroyed a porton of the west side of Sykes St. in 1881, and all of the east side in 1883. In 1885 a steam fire engine was purchased and the present fire hall built in 1887.

Half-title. c. 1916 M. Ella Chaffey. A fantasy concerning a prince only six inches tall. It is a heroic tale in miniature filled with fairy tale characters. The adventurous road, pages 93 to 163, set along the southern coast of British Columbia, is also a fantasy involving two young children and the creatures of the woods. 590 CURWOOD, James Oliver, 1878-1927. c. 1914 Cosmopolitan Book Corp. Curwood was an American author popular in his period. He spent considerable time in northern Canada among Eskimos, and had experience in trapping wild animals. His many novels have small literary value, but he was an effectively robust storyteller, and his concentration on adventures in the wild life of the north was a product of his first-hand experience, however extravagantly heightened in terms of fiction. (Ward). Kazan's life is spent around Hudson's Bay posts in northern Canada. He has often been treated cruelly, but is drawn to the female members of the human species who treat him kindly. The story is reminiscent of Jack London's The call of the wild.
