Sir Walter Scott
Poet and novelist
The son of an Edinburgh lawyer, Walter Scott was born in College Wynd, Edinburgh (the site of the house is marked by a commemorative plaque at the top of Guthrie Street) and was brought up at 25 George Square (marked by another plaque), where the family lived until the death of Walter Scott, Senior. The young Walter Scott attended the Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh, and was called to the bar in 1792. He married Charlotte Mary Carpenter in 1797 and moved to a house in Castle Street, Edinburgh (marked by yet another plaque) before moving to Ashestiel on the Tweed in 1804. In 1804 Scott presented his alma mater with a copy of "Sir Tristrem: a metrical romance of the thirteenth century by Thomas of Erclidoune, called the Rhymer" (1804) which he himself had copied and edited from the Auchinleck manuscript. 170 years later the University was to purchase from Dr James Corson, former Deputy Librarian of the University Library, the Corson Walter Scott Collection , which includes other copies, editions and reviews of one of Scott's earliest published works.

    Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832)
Sir Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771. When he was eighteen months old he was crippled for life by an ailment and his lameness could not be overcome by his physical robustness. He was educated at the High School of Edinburgh. His father was a lawyer and so Scott too had to attend the Scottish Bar in 1792 as a pleader without much success. Since childhood Scott was fascinated by the old songs and legends of his country, Scotland. He had travelled Scotland extensively and thus became familiar with every aspect of Scottish life .He remembered the travel experiences and drew upon them later in his literary career.
Scott began his literary career as a poet. His earliest poetical efforts were translations from German. 'Lenore' (1796) was the most outstanding among them though he was still at a budding stage. Later he wrote delightful poems like 'Lochinvar', ' The Lady of the Lake'. Despite the flaws the poems were popular mainly because of their stories. The vivid pictures, heroic characters, rapid action and a flavour of adventure continue to capture the interest of readers.
Sir Walter Scot was not just a storyteller but a grand figure in the history of English Literature. He was an epitome of two significant movements of the 18th century-the triumph of Romantic poetry of Wordsworth and Coleridge and the tremendous success of the first English novelists. He could blend facts with fiction skilfully and thus recreate the past vividly with the power of his creative imagination. Scott created his characters, put them through stirring incidents and left his readers breathless till the end. His novels are set in Scotland mostly and have the flavour of the Scottish moors and mountains.

The Source: Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832): "Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft" The text that I have used here has been taken from the 29th Volume of "The Miscellaneous Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart." which has been published in 1871 by Adam and Charles Black of Edinburgh. Story of Assueit and Asmund: "The Norse men were the more prone to these superstitions, because it was a favourite fancy of theirs that, in many instances, the change from life to death altered the temper of the human spirit from benignant to malevolent; or perhaps, that when the soul left the body, its departure was occassionally supplied by a wicked demon, who took the opportunity to enter and occupy its late habitation. Upon such a supposition the wild fiction that follows is probably grounded; which, extravagant as it is, possesses something striking to the imagination. Saxo Grammaticus tells us of the fame of two Norse princes or chiefs, who had formed what was called a brotherhood in arms, implying not only the firmest friendship and constant support during all the adventures which they should undertake in life, but binding them by a solemn compact, that after the death of either, the survivor should descend alive into the sepulchre of his brother-in-arms, and consent to be buried along with him. The task of fulfilling this dreadful compact fell upon Asmund - his companion Assueit, having been slain in battle.

    Sir Walter Scott
Scottish Novelist and Poet Oh what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive!
    Sir Walter Scott
was born on August 15, 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Scott created and popularized historical novels in a series called the Waverley Novels. In his novels Scott arranged the plots and characters so the reader enters into the lives of both great and ordinary people caught up in violent, dramatic changes in history. Scott's work shows the influence of the 18th century enlightenment. He believed every human was basically decent regardless of class, religion, politics, or ancestry. Tolerance is a major theme in his historical works. The Waverley Novels express his belief in the need for social progress that does not reject the traditions of the past. He was the first novelist to portray peasant characters sympathetically and realistically, and was equally just to merchants, soldiers, and even kings. Scott wrote frequently about the conflicts between different cultures. Ivanhoe (1791) deals with the struggle between Normans and Saxons, and the Talisman (1825) describes the conflict between Christians and Muslims. The novels dealing with Scottish history are probably Scott's best. They deal with clashes between new commercial English culture and an older Scottish culture. Many critics rank "Old Mortality" (1816), "The Heart of Midlothian" (1819), and "St Ronan's Well" (1824) as Scott's best novels. Other works in the Waverley series include "Rob Roy" (1817), "A Legend of Montrose" (1819), and "Quentin Dunward" (1823).

    Sir Walter Scott
There are many accomplished Scotts. They were generals, artists, inventors, explorers, academics, and even a wizard. But perhaps the best know was the literary great, Sir Walter Scott. Through is work, Scotland's heritage was restored after years of English oppression. Much of the lore of Scotland as we know it today can be traced directly back to Sir Walter's efforts. Sir Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771 on August 15th. Educated for the law, he obtained the office of sheriff-depute of Selkirkshire in 1799 and in 1806 the office of clerk of session, a post whose duties he fulfilled faithfully for some twenty-five years. His lifelong interest in Scottish antiquity and the ballads which recorded Scottish history led him to try his hand at narrative poems of adventure and action. The Lay of the Last Minstrel Marmion (1808), and The Lady of the Lake (1810) made his reputation as one of the leading poets of his time. A novel, Waverley , which he had begun in 1805 was published anonymously in 1814. Subsequent novels appeared with the note "by the author of Waverley "; hence his novels are often called collectively "the
