Sir Walter Scott was one of those "author-lawyers" (think Terry Brooks or John Grisham), laboring at the law for over 30 years while writing "on the side" and proving extremely prolific. Born in Edinburgh on August 15, 1771, Scott had polio as a toddler and bore with a limp the rest of his life. Due to his health, he spent a lot of time as a child at his grandfather's country home in the Borders (southern Scotland) and eventually, when money and position permitted, built himself a castle there called Abbotsford. Like his castle, "flamboyant" well describes Scott who enjoyed his fame, his fortune and being in the limelight. After writing poetry for several years (eg, The Lay of the Last Minstrel, Marmion

Sir Walter Scott
Sir Walter Scott
Great Scottish patriot, writer and poet. Educated at the Old High School in Edinburgh, Scott then studied Law at the University of Edinburgh and became an advocate. His novels are steeped in the traditions and customs of Scotland, based on real events and characters not "the fine-spun cobwebs of the brain." He did much towards identifying and nurturing a Scottish cultural identity, and indeed invented many expressions of this identity, through modern tartans, created for King George IV's visit in 1822, and a propensity to re-write, or at least augment, history. His literary works include Marmion Waverley Kenilworth Ivanhoe The Bride of Lammermoor Heart of Midlothian Bonnie Prince Charlie and the '45 and Rob Roy He was also a translator, biographer (of Napoleon) and passionate collector of all things Scottish. He made his home at Abbotsford House, on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders and was buried in the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, located near to St. Boswells.

The Lady of the Lake
by Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832)
Type of Work:

Romantic metrical poem Setting
Sixteenth-century Scotland Principal Characters
James Douglas, outlawed uncle of the Earl of Angus
Ellen Douglas, his daughter (The Lady of the Lake)
Roderick Dhu, a rebel Highland chief of Clan Alpine, and protector of the Douglas's Allan-bane, the Douglas' minstrel and devoted servant James Fitz-James, a Saxon Lowlander Knight Malcolm Graeme, Ellen's young love Story Overveiw James Fitz-James, a Saxon knight from Stirling Castle, became lost as he hunted in the Highlands. Sounding his horn, he was rescued - not by his comrades, but by Ellen Douglas, who, with her father, lived at Loch Katerine under the protection of her Highlander cousin, Roderick Dhu. Although the men were away, Fitz-James was taken in and extended Highland hospitality. It disturbed Fitz-James that this girl bore such a resemblance to members of the hunted Douglas clan. Nevertheless, he was smitten by Ellen's beauty and kindness and dreamed of her as he slept. On the next morning Fitz-James left the island with a guide. Later, Roderick and Douglas returned home from their separate journeys, Douglas accompanied bv young Malcolm Graeme. Roderick, a fierce, plundering, middle-aged warrior, hoped to i-narry Ellen, both because he loved her and because their marriage would unite Clan Douglas with Clan Alpine to create a powerful political force. Although Ellen appreciated Roderick's protection, she was frightened by his manner and had set her heart on Malcolm Graeme, her first suitor, whom Roderick despised. When Roderick extended his marriage proposal to her in the company of all, Malcolm detected Ellen's deep disquiet, but before he could speak, her father interceded, explaining tactfully that such a union would be a political misalliance; Roderick was a sworn enemy of the King, while he, Douglas, in spite of his outlawed status, still loved his monarch.

A wilful man maun hae his way. Proverbs And quick his colour went and came, As fear and rage alternate rose. Proverbs At morn the blackcock trims his jetty wing, 'Tis morning prompts the linnet's blithest lay; All Nature's children feel the matin spring Of life reviving, with reviving day. Proverbs But ask not thou if happiness be there, If the loud laugh disguise convulsive throe, Or if the brow the heart's true livery wear. Proverbs But he who stems a stream with sand, And fetters flame with flaxen band, Has yet a harder task to prove By firm resolve to conquer love! The SIR WALTER SCOTT Way Sir Walter Scott's Connections
Sir Walter Scott 1771 - 1832 Born in Edinburgh he was a younger son of Walter and Anne Scott, his father being a solicitor and Writer to the Signet. The very early years of his childhood were spent in the Borders at Sandyford (Smailholm) and Kelso before returning to Edinburgh. Walter Scott was educated at Edinburgh High School and Edinburgh University and became a Advocate. He married Margaret Charpentier in 1797 and they had four children. In 1799 Walter Scott became Sheriff- depute of Selkirkshire and shortly after that he and his family moved to the Borders area, first to Ashiestiel then in 1812 to Cartleyhole farmhouse. This land was renamed Abbotsford and the house that now exists was built in stages and ultimately replaced the earlier house. Sir Walter Scott was created a Baronet in 1820 by King Goerge IV. On his death in 1832 he was buried beside his wife at Dryburgh Abbey. Border Connections
Sir Walter Scott had connections with the border area through his ancestors, his early childhood and the many times he would ride through the Ettrick, Yarrow, Teviot and Tweed valleys. This love of the Scottish Borders was enhanced when he came to live in the area in 1804. It is not surprising therefore that there are few if any parts of the Way that do not have a close connection with Sir Walter Scott.
Some of these connections are detailed below: Moffat - The Black Bull Inn
It is reputed that Sir Walter Scott had visited this Inn. If this is so he would be one of several well known author/poets to have frequented this establishment. uindoubtedly the strongest literary connection with the Inn is with Robert Burns who penned a verse on the window pane. James Hogg was also thought to frequent the inn.
