Service A Bibliography by Peter Mitham This first edition is an authoritative guide to the works of British/Canadian poet-author Robert W. Service (1874-1958). Born in Preston, Lancashire, Service learned to love verse and recite parlour ballads from his grandfather and aunts before he was nine years old. Shortly thereafter, he discovered the works of Browning, Tennyson, Verlaine, and Zola and became captivated. By age sixteen, Service claimed to have published a score of poems in the local weeklies. In 1896, the young man emigrated to the United States and then settled in north-western Canada. The exuberant people and magnificent scenery of British Columbia and the Yukon filled him with an ebullient enthusiasm which was reflected and captured in his poetry and his later novels. Intended to be a Christmas keepsake for his friends and relatives, Service selected several poems that he had written in British Columbia and the Yukon for printing. The title of this keepsake was Songs of a Sourdough. The publishing company liked the poetry so much that they accepted it as a publication of the house. The book was a huge success selling 1,250 copies before the book was officially published in 1907. Service wrote a prodigious stream of poems and rough, frontier literature. Translations of his poetry has. been made into French, Swedish, Norwegian, and other languages. When Service died at his home in Lancieux, France in 1958, he enjoyed the reputation of being one of the most popular and profitable versifiers of the century. In this well-researched and scholarly bibliography, Peter Mitham has produced a brilliant and welcomed bibliography of Robert W. Service’s works.

Robert William Service Robert William Service was born on January 16, 1874 to a Scottish bank clerk and the daughter of an English factory owner. At the age of 15 he followed his father into the banking business, but in 1896 he emigrated to Canada where he joined his younger brother in an experiment in ranching. The life of a farmer in British Columbia, however, was far from his expectations and after 18 months he set off for California. For the next 6 years Service drifted up and down the Pacific coast. In 1903, finding himself broke in Vancouver, he applied to and was hired by the Canadian Bank of Commerce and won a posting in Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. Here Service found the western life he had sought, with its balance of a frontier sort of social life and the solitude of the northern woods. Songs of a Sourdough (reissued as The Spell of the Yukon ) was published to some success. In 1908 he was transformed 400 miles north to Dawson where he composed and published Ballads of a Cheechako and, the following year, resigned from the bank in order to write full time.

Miscellaneous Biography Robert William Service was born in Preston, Lancashire, England on January 16, 1874 to Scottish parents. Educated at the University of Glasgow, Robert Service moved to Canada in 1894. He spent eight years in the Yukon working for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, arriving in the Klondike several years after the peak of the Gold Rush. He was a correspondent for the Toronto Star during the Balkan Wars of 1912-13 and an ambulance driver in France during World War I. A poet and a novelist, Service was known as "the Canadian Kipling" for his popular verse ballads of the "frozen North." Service’s frontier ballads include "The Shooting of Dan McGrew," "The Law of the Yukon" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee" collected in Songs of a Sourdough (1907) later reissued as The Spell of the Yukon The Trail of ’98 (1910) is a vivid novel of the conditions in the Alaskan Klondike. Service also wrote two autobiographical works, Ploughman of the moon (1945) and Harper of Heaven (1948). Service died in Lancieux, France September 11, 1958.

Situated in a secluded hollow just off the main Glasgow to Kilwinning Road (the A737) or only 25 minutes walk from Kilwinning Town Centre. Kilwinning Abbey Founded between 1140 and 1191 by the De Morville family. The abbey was attacked in 1559 because any worship contrary to the new Protestant confession of faith was banned and one year later the abbey was cast down by the Earls of Arran, Argyll and Glencairn. A Clock Tower Heritage Centre and the much later Abbey Church occupy this Kilwinning Town Centre site now. Clock Tower Heritage Centre After an extensive refurbishment programme during 1993-95, the tower is now open to visitors. It is virtually 2 minutes from the town centre and is well signposted. Biographies of the featured poets Li Po (Japanese Rihaku) (701-762) Chinese poet, one of the greatest figures of Chinese literature. Li Po (or Li Bai) was born into the minor nobility in what is now Sichuan (Szechwan) Province. After an apprenticeship with a Daoist hermit and a time of wandering, he lived briefly as a poet at the Tang dynasty court in Changan but left as the result of intrigue. Then he returned to a life of Daoist study and carefree reflective wandering, writing poems and enjoying nature and the pleasures of wine, supplied free by the emperor's orders. According to legend, Li Po was drowned while drunkenly leaning from a boat to embrace the Moon's reflection on the water. He spent his childhood in Scotland, educated at the University of Glasgow, and emigrated to Canada in 1894. While working for the Canadian Bank of Commerce he was stationed for eight years in Whitehorse, Yukon. He was a correspondent for the Toronto Star during the Balkan Wars of 1912-13 and an ambulance driver and correspondent in France during World War I. He settled in France after WW1 and returned to Canada during WWII. His vagabond career took him throughout the world, with a diversity of jobs from cook to clerk, from correspondent to hobo.
