Poems of the Week: The West by John Stringer This week I thought we would talk about poems of the American (including Canadian!) West. To say the least, this is a field that owes little to the English models! Doesn't really have much to do with Wordsworth, or even Larkin, come to that. So far as California is concerned, the history really began in the middle of the nineteenth century: and one of the key people in the early days was Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) (1835-1910). Clemens was born in Hannibal, on the west bank of the Missouri, where at the age of 13 he became a full-time apprentice to a local printer. When his older brother Orion established the Hannibal Journal , Clemens became a compositor for the paper. After working for a period as an itinerant printer, he rejoined Orion in Keokuk, Iowa, and in 1856 he started wandering again with a commission to write some comic travel letters for the Keokuk Daily Post . However, right after this started, he signed up as an apprentice to a steamboat pilot, and for four years he plied the Mississippi river. In 1861, he joined Orion on a trip to the Nevada Territory, and became a writer for the Virginia City

Return to The Original Home Page of Robert W. Service I keep accumulating bits and pieces, odd and ends, that are difficult to classify and place on a specific page - thus, the Trivia Page. Most recent items are listed first.
Updated June 1, 2002 This was supplied by Edward Ronnie . Many thanks. Here's a copy of a dedication or rather rededication written in the fly leaf of my copy of the 'Trail of 98' to Miss Hain(e)y on her engagement to Royal R Brown. Below the picture is a
a typed version of the same as it is not easy to read even in the original.
Dear Miss Hainey
And as you go through life remember ‘Nellie’
‘god’ would not reveal to you the great reality of love, only to plunge you into darkness – ‘true love cannot be in vain. So read this book a chapter of my own life – the last two chapters were written by ‘your(s) Royal’
Robert W. Service
The Author
‘Nellie’
‘The Author’ While staying at the Ansonia Hotel in New York City Mr. Service drafted on nine pages of the hotel stationary his poem, The Faceless Man . It is written in pencil. Here are two of the pages: The stationary is clearly old and I am not sure the Hotel Ansonia is still in existence. Comparing the version of the poem that is posted on this website with the draft we have, there are some sentence structure changes. The only word he changed was in the eighth stanza, eighth line. The word in our draft is "hideous", and in the published version the word is "piteous". The rest of the poem is word for word.

Orleans Cemetery is located in the town of Orleans on Highway 96, approximately 100 miles from the Interstate 5/Highway 96 interchange. Orleans is located in Humboldt County but is very close to Siskiyou County so we chose to include it here. It is an extremely overgrown cemetery with many stones completely engulfed in giant blackberry bushes. We were scratched, bitten and hot by the time we gave up. The markers we were not able to reach will have to stay unread until such time that cemetery is cleaned up. We did use the cemetery plot map to fill in missing records but no dates were available.
