Seton, Ernest Thompson 1860-1946, American writer and artist, b. England. His name was originally Ernest Seton Thompson. His stories and paintings of wildlife, especially Wild Animals I Have Known (1898, new ed. 1942), were standard works on nature study and wood lore for boys and girls in the first quarter of the 20th cent. In 1902 he organized the Woodcraft Indians (later the Woodcraft League), much in the spirit of the later Boy Scout movement. See his autobiography, The Trail of an Artist-Naturalist (1940) and extracts from his journals, ed. by his widow, J. M. Seton (1967).

Ernest Thompson Seton was a naturalist and author born in South Shields county, Durham. At the age of six he and his family emigrated to Canada, living in Lindsay, Ontario, which provided a setting for a novel written later on in his life, Two Little Savages (1903). He later moved to Toronto to get his education, and became a Naturalist to the Government of Manitoba, starting the "Woodcraft Movement," which later melded with the boy scouts and got him appointed Chief Scout of America. He began writing animal stories in the 1880s, in 1898 publishing a collection called Wild Animals I Have Known . Some of his stories in this mold include The Trail of the Sand hill Stag (1899) and The Biography of a Grizzly (1900). Richard Adams admits Seton as an influence on his novel Watership Down.

A s a youth, Robert Baden-Powell greatly enjoyed the outdoors, learning about nature and how to live in the wilderness. After returning as a military hero from service in Africa, Baden-Powell discovered that English boys were reading the manual on stalking and survival in the wilderness he had written for his military regiment. Gathering ideas from Ernest Thompson Seton, Daniel Carter Beard, and others, he rewrote the manual as a nonmilitary nature skill book and called it Scouting for Boys.
To test his ideas, Baden-Powell brought together 22 boys to camp at Brownsea Island, off the coast of England. This historic campout was a success and resulted in the advent of Scouting. Thus, the imagination and inspiration of Baden-Powell, later proclaimed Chief Scout of the World, brought Scouting to youth the world over.

The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America, incorporated on February 8, 1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916, is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness.
    Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law The mission of the Blackhawk Area Council is to assure that every eligible youth in the council territory has the opportunity to join the Boy Scouts of America and to participate in a quality Scouting program. Tale of the Unknown Scout Scouting was brought to America by William D. Boyce, a Chicago publisher, and the way Boyce discovered Scouting is one of the movement's most colorful stories. Boyce, it seems, was in London in the fall of 1909 and was out in a famed London fog looking for an office in the center of the city.

The Book of Woodcraft and Indian Lore
Edward Thomson Seton This is the great book of the woodcraft movement of the early twentieth century, glorifying the outdoor life and respect for the environment. The first principle of woodcraft was not just to be outdoors but to interact with it, and thus build life skills. The role model was the heroic Indian of Fenimore Cooper and Longfellow; the ideal, the Spartan-like Indian creed of courage, honor, reverence, and discipline. Chapters are devoted to Woodland Songs, Dances and Ceremonies; Scouting Indoors and Outdoors including star lore; Signalling and Indian Signs; Craft and Games of the Summer Camp; Health and Woodland Medicine; Natural History; Forestry; Indian Ways and Campfire Stories, all with profuse illustrations.
