In her book By a Thousand Fires, published in 1967, E.T.Seton's wife Julia Seton wrote in another brief chronology 1946: Seton died. Active and in full command of his talents to the very end, he had influenced three generations during his life time. Through his books, now translated into nearly every language, he will continue to delight and instruct generations yet to come.
30 years after publication of Julia's book, the prophecy is proving true. In 1997, Steve Soldan, age 17, one of the latest of those generations, drew this picture from a period photograph, in tribute to Seton. 1860 Born In South Shields, Durham, England, August 14. 1866 Immigrated to Lindsay, Ontario, Canada with his parents and nine brothers. Seton was a Canadian for 64 ot his 96 years of life. 1870-1879 Family moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada . Two Little Savages later recorded his youthful adventures in Toronto's ravines. 1976 First oil painting "The Sharpshin Hawk" at age 16. He produced 4,000 paintings, drawings and sketches during his lifetime.

Seton, Ernest Thompson Seton, Ernest Thompson, , American writer and artist, b. England. His name was originally Ernest Seton Thompson. His stories and paintings of wildlife, especially Wild Animals I Have Known (1898, new ed. 1942), were standard works on nature study and wood lore for boys and girls in the first quarter of the 20th cent. In 1902 he organized the Woodcraft Indians (later the Woodcraft League), much in the spirit of the later Boy Scout movement. See his autobiography, The Trail of an Artist-Naturalist (1940) and extracts from his journals, ed. by his widow, J. M. Seton (1967).

    ERNEST THOMPSON SETON
Some men called him "Wolf" Born Ernest Evan Thompson on August 14, 1860 in South Shields, Durham, England, eighth child in a family of ten sons, his family was descended from Lord Seton, Earl of Winton. In 1866, his family moved to Canada and settled near Lindsay, Ontario. It was there, in the wooded area, that his fascination with nature evolved. In 1870, the family moved to Toronto and from 1870 to 1879, Seton roamed the Don Valley - a haven for birds. In 1873, he purchased a copy of Ross's Birds of Canada and soon realized, through his own observations, the many errors in the book. At the age of 16, he started gathering information for his own book on the birds of Canada. His painting started in 1876 and he became a member of the Toronto Society of Arts. His Sharpshin Hawk earned him a two year apprenticeship in a Toronto portrait studio. At nineteen(1879), he won a gold medal in the Society's Art Contest. He then moved to England where, in 1880, he won a seven year scholarship to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in London. In 1881, he enjoyed his first public exhibition but could not resist the "Call of the West" - the "Buffalo Wind" - that beckoned his return to Canada in 1882. After a brief rest in Toronto, he left for Carberry, Manitoba aboard a colonist-cattle train. That year, he adopted the Seton ancestral name but initially called himself Ernest Seton Thompson.

Notes: Ernest Thompson Seton was a naturalist and author born in South Shields county, Durham. At the age of six he and his family emigrated to Canada, living in Lindsay, Ontario, which provided a setting for a novel written later on in his life, Two Little Savages (1903). He later moved to Toronto to get his education, and became a Naturalist to the Government of Manitoba, starting the "Woodcraft Movement," which later melded with the boy scouts and got him appointed Chief Scout of America. He began writing animal stories in the 1880s, in 1898 publishing a collection called Wild Animals I Have Known . Some of his stories in this mold include The Trail of the Sand hill Stag (1899) and The Biography of a Grizzly (1900). Richard Adams admits Seton as an influence on his novel
