This drawing of Raccoon "poses & details" exemplifies one aspect of the many talents of Ernest Thompson Seton (1860–1946), one of the best-known and most controversial and prolific naturalists of his time. His fine illustrations enhanced not only his own books but also those of other authors. Seton’s writings ranged from the highly regarded Lives of Game Animals to sentimental and now dated anthropomorphic animal stories.
Raccoons frequent city parks and natural areas, private backyards, and sometimes totally inappropriate locales: in May 1995 one was sighted on the elevated subway platform at Broadway and 231st Street. The Raccoon led pursuing police on a merry chase until it was finally tranquilized and captured. Check out the sighting log to record your interaction with some of the native New York City wildlife, such as the Raccoon, featured in

Gerry is coordinator of the “Mixed-Grass Prairie Stewardship Program” a volunteer effort that strives to preserve the native mixed-grass prairie in south-western Manitoba. Gerry was the catalyst for this program by pulling together a group of like-minded individuals who laid out a plan for the project. She was involved in the first fund-raising efforts and garnering support from a variety of contributing organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, Manitoba Department of Natural Resources, Manitoba Habitat Heritage organization and the Manitoba Cattle Producers. Going one step further than just creating general public awareness this program specifically educates landowners about land management practices that will help enhance native plants and grasses. A personal visit from a volunteer stewardship program representative explains how the native prairie ecosystem works and how rotational grazing practices will help keep desirable plants rather than weedy, less productive vegetation.

May 8, 2002 Tantramar Flashback By Bill Hamilton What Have They In Common? Great Village, Westcock And Carberry At first glance it would appear that these three locations have few, if any, links. However, a closer look reveals that the first two share a familiar heritage. Both Great Village, Nova Scotia and Westcock, New Brunswick were once sites of Acadian settlements, and later played important roles in the nineteenth century's Golden Age of Sail. Westcock overlooks Cumberland Basin, while Great Village straddles a river that flows into Cobequid Bay. Inevitably, both bear the mark of Fundy's restless tides. In stark contrast, Carberry is thousands of kilometres from the Maritimes and the influence of the sea. Located in southern Manitoba east of Brandon, it was first settled in the late 1870s. Nestled in rolling hills and fertile farmland, it has a population of 1,500, making it the largest of the three communities. The economy is mainly based on agriculture; however, there are two features that make Carberry a tourist destination. The Spirit Sands Desert is billed as "five square kilometres of blowing sand dunes", while nearby Spruce Woods Provincial Park is only minutes away from town. Obviously, from the standpoint of history and geography, Carberry is very different from either Great Village or Westcock, yet there are connecting links through literature.

American Identities Through the Eyes of Beard and Seton
The beginning of the 20th century, a major issue troubled two men: Beard and Seton. This issue was how to create modern American character in children, especially boys.
    Daniel Carter Beard
    Ernest Thompson Seton
Beard, one of the co-founders of the Boy Scouts of America, served as the national scout commissioner, and was an American illustrator and naturalist. To find out more about Beard's biography, click on his picture. Seton, one of the co-founders of the Boy Scouts of America was a founder of the "Woodcraft Indians" and wrote the first Scouting Manual. "Sons of Daniel Boone"
    "Woodcraft Indians"
    According to Deloria:
    • Beard encouraged boys to act out pioneer experiences. Patriotism: "celebrates a particular white American history where children learned Americanness by recreating lives of pioneer scouts who had tamed the American frontier." Boy Scouts stood for scouting, pioneers, patriotism, and service.
