SHAKESPEARE William , poète et dramaturge anglais
Il serait né un 23 avril 1564, à Stratford upon Avon, dans le comté de Warwick. Il était le troisième enfant de John Shakespeare, un paysan récemment enrichi et devenu un notable local, et de Mary Arden, issue d'une famille catholique de riches propriétaires terriens. On suppose qu'il fut élève à l'école de Stratford mais, son père ayant eu des revers de fortune, il quitta sa ville natale avec, semble-t-il l'intention de s'établir à Londres. C'est grâce à son activité de dramaturge qu'il aurait, plus tard, rétabli la fortune familiale. En 1582, âgé seulement de dix-huit ans, il épousa la fille d'un fermier, Anne Hathaway, de huit ans son aînée, et dont il eut trois enfants.
Shakespeare devint actionnaire de la compagnie théâtrale des " Lord Chamberlain's Men ", qui, après la mort de la reine Élisabeth Ire, prit le nom de " King's Men ". Les représentations avaient lieu habituellement au Globe Theatre puis, à partir de 1608, au Blackfriars, mais Shakespeare eut l'occasion de représenter ses pièces à la cour d'Élisabeth plus souvent qu'aucun autre dramaturge. En 1612, après une vingtaine d'années passées au théâtre, William Shakespeare revint définitivement à Stratford, où il avait acheté des biens ; il y mourut le 23 avril 1616.

William Shakespeare wurde am 26. April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon geboren und starb am Shakespeare 23. April 1616 ebenda. Der englische Dramatiker, Schauspieler und Dichter lebte im Elisabethanischen Zeitalter und schrieb ungezählte Dramen, zu denen u.a. Hamlet und Macbeth zählen. Shakespeare gilt heute noch als bedeutendster Bühnenautor der Weltliteratur. Da kaum biographische Dokumente existieren, ist das Lebensbild Shakespeares nur unzuverlässig und bruchstückhaft zu rekonstruieren. Ab 1589 dürfte sich Shakespeare in London aufgehalten haben; spätestens ab 1594 war er Autor und Schauspieler einer berühmten Londoner Schauspieltruppe ( Chamberlain's Men , ab 1603 King's Men ; 1599 Bau des Globe Theatre , dessen Mitinhaber er war). Ab 1612 lebte er wieder in Stratford. Shakespeare schrieb Dramen für seine Schauspieltruppe (auch im Kollektiv, u.a. mit C. Marlowe, B. Jonson, T. Kyd) zum einmaligen Zwecke der unmittelbaren Aufführung; gedruckt wurden sie ohne sein Zutun (zu seinen Lebzeiten waren bereits 20 Dramen erschienen). London repräsentierte bis 1642 eine Theaterkultur, die das Theater mit einem breiten und engagierten Publikum zu einem wesentlichen Bestandteil des öffentlichen Lebens machte. Das sogenannte elisabethanische Theater sprach gerade auch die Unterschichten besonders an. Zu Shakespeares frühen Werken gehören die Geschichtsdramen, zu denen u.a. Heinrich VI.
