November 2002 By Pat Lawrence These were women of courage, energy and extraordinary personality who persevered in the face of overwhelming obstacles. The most interesting women of their time, passionately interested in ideas and ideals, they are women we would love to meet. Make the acquaintance of just a few of the fascinating women who changed America. CARRIE LANE CHAPMAN CATT, 1859 - 1947, of Wisconsin, was a teacher, school superintendent, journalist and lecturer. As a field organizer with Susan B. Anthony, she was fundraiser, planner, and administrator. She reorganized the National American Woman Suffrage Association to be more political in 1890, led New York campaigns and national and international organizations. Her secret "Winning Plan" combined state and federal work and unified the mainline movement 1916. She organized the 14-month campaign for ratification, founded the League of Women Voters and worked for world peace. Besides Susan B. Anthony, she was most influential in getting American women their right to vote. ALICE STOKES PAUL, 1885 - 1977, was the chief strategist for the militant suffrage wing, founder of the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage and the National Woman's Party and author of the Equal Rights Amendment. She was jailed in England and the US. After waging a prison hunger strike, she was hospitalized, force-fed and treated as insane. An international organizer with a law degree, she influenced the United Nations charter.

02-23 TABLE of CONTENTS: Anna Howard Shaw, Suffragist DATES, ANNIVERSARIES, and EVENTS QUOTES by Toni Morrison and Mary Ashton Livermore. Anna Howard Shaw, Suffragist One of the eloquent orators on behalf of women's suffrage and rights, Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919) was one of Susan B. Anthony's closest associates. She headed the women's suffrage movement in 1904-15 between the terms of Carrie Chapmen Catt.
Many masculists and HIStorians attempt to paint the leaders of the women's rights and suffrage movement as elitist and not representative of the "common woman." Balderdash.
Let us quote from Ms. Shaw's autobiography of when she was 12 in 1859, a far cry from the cleaned up versions of her life you read in biographical sketches: "We all had an idea that we were going to a farm (in Michigan), and we expected some resemblance at least to the prosperous farms we had seen in New England. What we found awaiting us were the four walls and the roof of a good-sized log house, standing in a small cleared strip of the wilderness, its doors and windows represented by square holes, (its floor was only untamped dirt) the whole effect achingly forlorn and desolate... and I shall never forget the look my mother turned upon the place... something within her seemed to give way, and she sank upon the ground.

    In Honor of Great Women
    by Jo Freeman
The contributions of nineteen women to American life over four centuries were highlighted on October 7 when they were inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame. Among them were Attorney General Janet Reno (1938- ), suffragist and preacher Anna Howard Shaw(1847-1919), civil war surgeon Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919), and two retired Air Force generals Jeanne Holm (1921- ) and Wilma Vaught (1930- ). They bring to 176 the number of American women so honored "whose contributions to the arts, athletics, business, education, government, the humanities, philanthropy and science, have been the greatest value of the development of their country." The Hall of Fame was created in 1969 by the citizens of Seneca Falls, New York, home of the 1848 women's rights convention which wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, and of the 1923 National Woman's Party conference where the Equal Rights Amendment was introduced. For many years the New York Chiropractic College housed the Hall. After purchasing a former bank building in 1979 it moved to Fall street in downtown Seneca Falls. Inside are photographs of the women it honors and other exhibits on the achievements of American women.
