All but a handful represent idyllic, mythic or allegorical figures, or decorative designs. In the distinct minority are statues depicting actual people. In this ongoing Forgotten NY series , we'll show you most of the statues in NYC that represent someone who actually lived and breathed. Some, like George Washington, are known by every schoolkid, while some may have been known only by his/her immediate family, friends and the sculptor!

Lin Ze Xu was born in China in 1785. On December 31, 1838 he was appointed by the Emperor as Imperial Commissioner with the mission to eradicate opium in China. The sale of opium by the East India Company had jumped from 40,000 pounds in 1729 to three and one-half million pounds in 1832. In this position he proceeded to confiscate 2,600,000 pounds of opium and supervised its destruction during a 23-day campaign beginning on June 3, 1839 in Humen, China. This action served to ignite the Opium Wars with Britain. Three years later, China had lost the war and Lin Ze Xu lost his title. However, through his efforts he became a symbol of moral resistance to the invasion of drugs wherever their source.

    INTRODUCTION
Letters written by Carvill, his wife Kate and daughter Eliza, living in the United States and Canada, to his sister Eliza and, later, brother-in-law William Boyle in England. The letters discuss family and political matters and economic problems.
    DONOR INFORMATION
The Carvill Letters were transferred from the J. Christian Bay Collection at the State Historical Society of Missouri to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection on 4 January 1971 (SHS Accession No. 737). The letters had been preserved in Liverpool, England, before they were purchased by Bay.
    BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
George W. Carvill was born c. 1810 and came to the United States from London, England, in about 1829. He was apparently in business with his paternal uncles in New York City. Part of the business involved mines in Kentucky which Carvill managed. When his business dealings failed he became involved with cotton farming in Alabama. He married Mary Caroline Bennett, called Kate, in 1835. They had nine children: William Charles (b. 1837), Eliza Claudia (b. 1839), John Bennett (born c. 1841), George Arthur (b. 1843), Mary (1845-1846), Mary Caroline (b. 1847), Edward (b. 1849), Herman (born c. 1852), and Anna. As his children grew older Carvill became concerned about the moral effects of slavery on them as well as the lack of good schools. He also disliked the tropical climate. In 1846 the family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where Carvill was the bookkeeper and manager of a mill. The family moved again in 1852 to Caseyville, Kentucky, where he ran a saw mill and flour mill. He later took over a coal mine from a friend and owned steamboats to take the coal to Louisville.

    THE SHERIDAN MONUMENT
Somerset, Ohio has seen many changes and has had its share of memorable moments. Perhaps the most noteworthy event since the Civil War was the unveiling of the Philip H. Sheridan Memorial Statue. On November 2, 1905 many dignitaries came from Columbus, New York City, and Washington, D.C. for the event. As an individual described with child-like enthusiasm, "it was like the 4th of July in November" . Perhaps an appropriate postscript to this event was the fact that the actual unveiling occurred four hours after the scheduled time. There are some aspects about government in general and ours in particular that are truly timeless. It is an old adage that Republics are ungrateful, but this fair country of ours is dotted with many enduring witnesses to the contrary, and another is to be added to the number in the little town of Somerset, which enjoys the distinction of being the boyhood home of General Phil Sheridan. The monument is an equestrian statue of bronze, of heroic size, and was contracted for by the Commission appointed by the Governor for the purpose of rearing a monument. The Commission consisting of Hon. Tom Binckley, Rev. D. J. Kennedy, O.P., and W. H. Walker, was appointed July 1st, 1904, and contracted with the Harrison Granite Company of New York City, November 11th, 1904. The statue is the work of Mr. Carl Heber of New York, who is said to be a sculptor of much ability. The Sheridan Monument was delivered on a flatbed railroad car. Sixteen draft horses, supplied by local farmers, were used to bring it uptown from the railroad station located one half mile east of the village square. The cannon in the picture above was donated to the war effort during one of the many World War II scrap drives.

For the Plains Indians this was the last act of defiance ending in a massacre carried out by Colonel James Forsyth's Seventh Cavalry. There would be no more battles but this 100+ years old memory is still a wound in many hearts. Perhaps the most famous Indian-fighting general in the U.S. Army at the time, General Nelson A. Miles , accused Forsyth of "blind stupidity or criminal indifference" and relieved him of command. General Miles called this "a useless slaughter of Indian women and children". But the war department, determined to portray this final confrontation of the Indian wars in a heroic light, stopped any further investigation of the incident.
