    William Tecumseh Sherman
    American General
The following is from a speech given to the Lotos Club in New York City on January 11, 1908, by Robert Stuart MacArthur:
"You will recall the fact that a few years ago Charles Dickens the younger came to this city and gave readings from his father's books. Those readings were to be given in Chickering Hall. I went early; I had a seat on the platform. General Sherman, who then had his home in New York, came in and took a seat beside me. I had with me my little daughter, and I was very anxious that she should know General Sherman, so I took the liberty of presenting her to the great general. He said, 'I am so glad to have an opportunity to hear Charles Dickens, Junior. I owe and I think this remark has never been put into print; some day I propose to write it out I owe a debt of gratitude to his father, Charles Dickens, which I shall never be able to pay. During my march to the sea, after many of my greatest battles, I went into my tent, I took up David Copperfield, Martin Chuzzlewit, A Tale of Two Cities

Era 5: Civil War and Reconstruction
  • William T. Sherman was one of several Union generals who, under the leadership of Ulysses S. Grant, helped achieve a Union victory in the Civil War. Who were other important military leaders for the Union? For the Confederacy? Compare the armies, supplies, strategic positions, and overall goals of both the Union and the Confederacy at the outset of the war. Considering the strengths and weaknesses of each side, do you think a Union victory was assured? Why or why not?
  • The important military leaders for the Confederacy included: P.G.T. Beauregard, Stonewall Jackson, Albert Johnston, Joseph E. Johnston, Robert E. Lee, and James Longstreet. The Union could boast many advantages over the Confederacy at the start of the war. The Union had a population of 18 million, while the Confederacy had only 9 million, 3.6 million of whom were slaves. Farmers in the North produced more edible crops like corn, wheat, and oats than their southern counterparts, and most of the country's deposits of iron, coal, copper, and precious metals were found in the North. Ninety percent of the county's manufacturing capacity, two-thirds of the total railway mileage, and most of the factories for building trains were located in northern states. The Union controlled the seas and had access to European factories and trade.

policy of President Johnson, he supported his party, though opposed to its Radical -leaders. He warmly advocated the insertion in the Reconstruction Acts of a provision ensuring the early termination of military government; and he opposed the impeachment of President Johnson, though he voted for conviction on the trial. During the administrations of President Grant his leadership in shaping financial policy became generally recognized. The Resumption Act of 1875, which provided for the return of specie payments four years later, was largely his work both in inception and in formulation, and his appointment to the head of the Treasury Department by President Hayes in 1877 enabled him to carry the policy embodied in. the law to successful execution. His administration. of the department, in circumstances of great difficulty arising out of the “greenback” agitation and the adverse political complexion of Congress, won him high distinction as a financier. A selection from the correspondence of John Sherman and his brother Gen. W. T. Sherman was published as The Sherman Letters in
