Repository University of Notre Dame Archives Notre Dame, Indiana 46556 Source The William Tecumseh Sherman Family Papers, as they were deposited in the University of Notre Dame Archives by Miss Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman, prior to her death in 1959, consisted of correspondence, clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, diaries, various legal papers and documents, cancelled checks, bankbooks, financial ledgers, drafts for and copies of articles, speeches and military orders, and explanatory notations sometimes on the items themselves and sometimes on separated sheets. This material ranged from the year 1808 to the year 1959 and consisted of originals, photostats, microfilm, typewritten copies and handwritten copies. the nucleus of the collections had been gathered and preserved by Philemon Tecumseh Sherman followed the death of the father, General Sherman. It was subsequently augmented by Miss Fitch, Philemon's

William Tecumseh Sherman Union General A pioneer of modern warfare, William Tecumseh Sherman graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1840. He began his Civil War career as a colonel and, under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, became a major general after the Battle of Shiloh. Their success in the Vicksburg and Chattanooga campaigns made them rising stars in the North. Sherman's capture of Atlanta in September 1864 was a major blow to the Confederacy and a significant factor in Lincoln's reelection in November. Sherman then implemented his philosophy of psychological warfare and property destruction by having his army march through Georgia to Savannah. The Gallery's portrait, one of three that are virtually identical, was painted after the war, and belonged to Sherman, who commissioned a pendant portrait of his wife from Healy in 1868. Biographical/Historical Sketch Though William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) never commanded in a major Union victory he remains one of the best known of the Northern commanders. His father died when he was nine years old, and Sherman was raised by Senator Thomas Ewing and eventually married into the family. Through the influence of his patron, he obtained an appointment to West Point. Only five cadets of the class of 1840 graduated ahead of him, and he was appointed to the artillery. He received a brevet for his services in California during the Mexican War but resigned in 1853 as captain and commissary officer. Boynton: Sherman's Historical Raid: The Memoirs in the Light of the Record General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891); photo courtesy Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. One of the most infamous military leaders of the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) is possibly best known for his 1864 "March to the Sea" during which he led his troops from the newly captured Atlanta to Savannah on the Atlantic coast. On the way, he decimated the surrounding countryside, effectively destroying the South's ability to continue the war. Sherman's military strategies are considered to be forerunners of modern warfare. In 1875, Sherman wrote his autobiography, published by Appleton as a two-volume set and including a map of his Civil War marches. Shortly after its publication, Henry Boynton, a reporter for the Cincinnati Gazette , published a critical refutation of much of Sherman's account. Using War Office records, Boynton methodically detailed discrepancies in the Sherman book. He even went so far as to use a binding nearly identical to Sherman's. Both of the books, shown below, are first editions.

Sherman was a leading Union general in the American Civil War and commanding general of the United States Army. During the Civil War, he became famous for his "marches" across Georgia and the Carolinas. On these marches, Sherman's troops stripped barns, fields, and houses, tore up railroad tracks and burned vast stretches of farmland. The intent was to devastate soldiers' and civilians' lives alike shortening the war and restoring the nation. Sherman would bring the same military philosophy to the conflicts in the West. As commander of the Missouri district, Sherman directed a policy designed to ensure Army control over Indian affairs. His strategy included the extermination of the buffalo, animals that were central to the religion, culture and sustenance of the Plains Indians. For Sherman, the buffalo, like the native people themselves, were impediments to building the transcontinental railroad. He invited all the sportsmen of England and America to participate in a Great Buffalo Hunt and "make a grand sweep of them all." In 1867, Sherman was appointed to the Indian Peace Commission, where he took part in the negotiations with Indian leaders that produced the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868.

After the war Sherman was commissioned lieutenant general in the regular army and, following Grant's election to the presidency (1868), he was promoted to the rank of full general and given command of the entire U.S. Army. An eccentric, yet highly intelligent man, Sherman knew that the war had to be taken to the common people in the south, if the fighting spirit of the Confederacy was to be broken. In the opening days of the war, Sherman made comments that led some in the north to believe that he sympathized with the Confederate causes. Many of his closest friends were Army officers who left the Union to join the Confederacy. Sherman's early prediction that the war would be a long and bloody struggle led some in the north to believe that he was crazy. Of the northern generals, many consider Sherman to be one of the most capable. Some compare him to Nathan Bedford Forrest, a notable Confederate General.
