Sir Philip Sidney 15541586 Sidney Index. Editors Note Selected Works Letter Index.A Loving Father A Canonry in Christ Church Brother's Keeper In Great Peril.
http://www.oldarcadia.com/sidney_letters.html
Recently, while doing research for this site, I discovered among the documented details of Sir Philip Sidney's life many letters and excerpts from letters written by him and various members of his family. Some of these letters give a rare glimpse into the life of this poet and how it wasintertwined with those who loved him. I will begin with a letter from his father and add a letter each month, including Sidney's death bed plea to physician Johan Wyer for medical assistance.

Brother's Keeper

In Great Peril

Son Philip, I have recieved two letters from you, one written in Latin, the other in French: which I take in good part, and will you to exercise that practice of learning often; for that will stand you in most stead in that profession of life that you are born to live in. And now, since this is my first letter that I ever did write to you, I will not that it be all empty of some advice which my natural care of you provoketh me to wish you to follow, as documents to you in this your tender age.
Let your first action be the lifting up of your mind to Almighty God by hearty prayer; and feelingly digest the words you speak in prayer, with continual meditation and thinking of Him to whom you pray, and of the matter for which you pray. And use this as an ordinary act, and at an ordinary hour; whereby the time itself shall putyou in remembrance to do that you are accustomed to do in that time.

Renaissance Texts
This page, prepared by John F. Tinkler, is intended as a (growing) collection of links to Renaissance texts (and related resources), with a special emphasis on the English literature of the period. It is intended as an aid for my courses in Renaissance Literature in the English Department at Towson State University. The Continental Renaissance is here treated (very approximately) as stretching ca. 1300-1600, that is, beginning around Petrarch and ending around the death of Montaigne. The English Renaissance is treated as beginning with the period of Thomas More and John Colet, and ending around the generation of Miltonthat is, ca. 1500 to the mid 1600s. There are several major lists of links to English Renaissance texts: The most important is the collection of AUTHORS, WORKS, PROJECTS on the RENAISSANCE PAGE in the English section of Voice of the Shuttle. The most beautiful is the Homepage of Luminarium , which now combines collections of materials relating to the Middle Ages, sixteenth century, and early seventeenth century. This is a superb multimedia resource that attempts to give the browser a real feel for the historical context of the period's literature, complete with Background Information , and links to pictures A less visually impressive resource, but still very valuable, is the bookshelf of

Sir William Sidney (1482 - 1554)
William was a courtier to King Henry VIII and tutor (and later steward) to his son Edward. In 1552 - one year before his death, aged just 26 - Edward VI granted Penshurst to Sir William Sidney. William, now aged 70, had little time to enjoy Penshurst though and his son, Henry , inherited the property on his death just two years later.
Sir Henry Sidney (1529 - 1586)
Henry had spent his early life at court as the companion of the the young prince Edward. Within two years of Penshurst being given to the Sidney family both his father and childhood friend - now King Edward VI - were dead. Edward contracted tuberculosis (although it is also rumoured that he was poisoned) and is said to have died in Henry's arms. In 1553 Henry married Lady Mary Dudley, sister to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick and Lord Guildford Dudley. Guildford was married to the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey, grand-daughter to Henry VII who had been named by Edward VI (under pressure from John Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland - Henry Sidney's father-in law) as his successor. Lady Jane reluctantly became queen but after only nine days the Lord Mayor of London announced that Henry VIII's eldest daughter, Mary, was rightfully Queen. Lady Jane Grey and many of her supporters - including her husband and father-in-law - were executed. Her brothers-in-law Ambrose and Robert were confined to the Tower of London but Henry Sidney and his wife escaped any implications.

This world uncertain is:
Fond are life's lustful joys;
Death proves them all but toys.
None from his darts can fly;
I am sick, I must die.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Rich men, trust not in wealth:
Gold cannot buy you health;
Physic himself must fade.
All things to end are made; The plague full swift goes by. I am sick, I must die. Lord, have mercy on us. Beauty is but a flower Which wrinkles will devour; Brightness falls from the air; Queens have died young and fair; Dust hath close Helen's eye. I am sick, I must die. Lord, have mercy on us. Strength stoops unto the grave; Worms feed on Hector brave. Swords may not fight with fate; Earth still holds ope her gate. Come, come, the bells do cry. I am sick, I must die. Lord have mercy on us. Wit and wantonness Tasteth death's bitterness;

Y ou cannot escape the fact that many of the Sidneys who have played a significant role in British history are members of this distinguished family. I have devoted this page of the directory to Penshurst, its history and its links with the Sidney family. T he history of Penshurst precedes Sir William by some 150 years. The estate, consisting of 4000 acres of hunting land, was bought by Sir John de Pultney in 1338 as a country retreat within easy reach of London. Pultney was a successful merchant, dealing in wool and wine, who had also lent significant amounts of money to the king, Edward III to support his hostilities against France. The enormous great hall that he built, measuring 60ft by 32ft, was built of local sandstone with chestnut beams decorated with life-size wooden figures. Now known as the Baron's Hall , it soared to a height of 60ft and took three years to complete.
