Related Sims Families Several Sims families, believed to be related to Pariss Sims and his brothers, came to America from North Ireland about the same time. Some came earlier. Some came direct from England and Scotland. As stated in Chapter One , there were more than a hundred Sims families in Virginia, North and South Carolina when the first census of the United States was taken in 1790 Tennessee was a part of North Carolina at the time. Knowing that Pariss Sims and his brothers were of Scotch-Irish ancestry, we have made every effort to confine this history to their family lines and those of Sims families believed to be related to them, as stated in the Foreword In our search, we found a number of Sims families which appeared to be related to Pariss Sims and his brothers, prior to their settlement in America. They followed the same general pattern in their movements and settlements and there are many threads of evidence of kinship, as will be noted in the family sketches that follow. The James Sims Family of Blount County James Sims (I), born in North Ireland about 1750, died in Blount County, Tenn., in 1849 in his 99th year. He was a sergeant in the Battle of King's Mountain during the American Revolution and it is said that a cannon ball passed so close under his chin, searing the skin to the extent that no hair would grow on it thereafter.

Other writings have been attributed to his pen, but on no good authority. They are printed, along with his undoubted works, in the Scriptores decem of Roger Twysden (1652). The most complete modern edition is that of Thomas Arnold (“ Rolls “ series, 2 vols., i882—i885). The valtie of the “ Northumbrian Annals,” which Simeon used for the Historia regunf, has been discussed by J. H. Hinde in the preface to his Symeonis Dunelmensis opera, vol. i. pp. xiv. If. (1868); by R. Pauli in Forsehungen zur deutschen Geschfchte, xii. pp. 137 sqq. (Gdttingen, 1872); and by W. Stubbs in the introduction to Roger of Hoveden, vol. i. p. x. (“ Rolls” series). Simeon’s works have been translated by J. Stevenson in his Oiurch Historians of ,E is gland, vol. iii. part ii. (f855). (H. W. C. D.) SIMEON, CHARLES (1759—1836), English evangelical divine, was born at Reading and educated at Eton. and Cambridge. In 1782 he became fellow of King’s College, Cambridge, and took orders, receiving the living of Holy Trinity, Cambridge, in the following year. He was at first so unpopular that the services were frequently interrupted, and he was often in.sulted in the streets. Having lived down this prejudice, he subsequently gained a very remarkable and lasting influence among the undergraduates of the university. He became a leader among evangelical churchmen, was one of the founders of the Church Missionary Society, and acted as adviser to the East India Company in the choice of chaplains for India. His chief work is a commentary upon the whole Bible, entitled Horae homileticae (London, 1819— 1820). He died on the 13th of November 1836, The “Simeon. Trustees “ were instituted by him for the purpose of acquiring church patronage in the interests of evangelical views.

Grown-ups love figures. When you tell them you have made a new friend, they never ask you any questions about essential matters. They never say to you, "What does his voice sound like? What games does he love best? Does he collect butterflies?" Instead, they demand: "How old is he? How many brothers has he? How much does he weigh? How much money does his father make?" Only from these figures do they think they have learned anything about him. Eloise Salholz in Newsweek )

    Biographical Sketch
Edgar Poe was born in Boston, January 19, 1809, the second child of Eliza Arnold Poe, a well-known actress, and David Poe, Jr., also an actor. Early in 1810 David Poe abandoned his family; nothing is known of his fate. Later that same year Eliza gave birth to her third child, Rosalie. By the summer of 1811 Eliza's health was failing and she died on December 8, 1811, in Richmond, Virginia, at the age of 24. The eldest son went to live with the Poe family in Baltimore, the infant daughter went to a Richmond family named MacKenzie, and Edgar was taken in by John and Frances (Fannie) Allan. John Allan, a partner in the trading firm The House of Ellis and Allan, promised to provide Edgar with a liberal education and he certainly provided the boy with a standard of living superior to the one to which he had been accustomed. The House of Ellis and Allan was prospering so well that in 1815 they decided to open an office in London. Six-and-a-half-year-old Edgar accompanied John and Fannie to England where he attended several boarding schools. After a slow beginning, the London offices seemed to be doing well. However, in 1819 the bottom fell out of the tobacco market, the business was ruined, and the family returned to Virginia in 1820.
