After an upbringing in the country, he studied literature and philosophy in Germany(1892- 1908) and traveled widely despite being an invalid after 1884. Pencho Slaveykov, who was inspired especially by Goethe, Heine, and Nietzsche, as well as by the simple eloquence and realism of Bulgarian folk songs, is best known for his unfinished epic poem "Kurvava Pesen"("Song of Blood"; written 1911-12; published 1913), which describes the sacrifices of the Bulgarian people in their struggle for the independence. He was also an outstanding essayist and translator of German literature. His poetry marks the beginning of an epoch in Bulgarian literature: he opened up man's inner world, he was interested in the individual, in suffering, in efforts to rise to the level of the superman, so that even in his epics on national themes he attacked problems of individual psychology. He returned to Bulgaria to become director of the National Library and the National Theatre, and to collaborate in the review "Misal".

Petko Slaveykov is one of the most prominent bulgarian poets, he is also a folklorist, journalist, political leader, tribune of the people. Petko Rachev Slaveykov (1827-1895) was all of these. A father of another famous Bulgarian poet - Pencho Slaveykov - he was, following the liberation of Bulgaria, a politician and a states-man. His use of the Bulgarian vernacular marks a turning point in the literature and culture of the country. "For the People" is, in effect, the poet's own story. It was written about 1880. For the People by Petko Slaveykov Ideals were what I went by- Everything else I reckoned a wrong, Possessing them, I ignored even myself, In the world, I saw not the world. All the time I watched over others, Right, I told myself, it must be right, My own works I delayed- Other's I did first. I lived my life in love with the people, With misfortunes all the more....

Colorado Department of Education What's Happening at the State Library by Nancy Bolt Bulgarian Update Two wonderful events occurred just before Christmas. First, we were notified by the National Commission Libraries and Information Science that we have been accepted as a participant in the Sister Libraries: White House Millennium Council Project. This is for our work with Bulgarian libraries. There will be a Sister Libraries International Conference in Denver in July 2000 at which time we will receive a plaque for our work. It's also exciting to know the conference will be in Denver. I will see if I can find the exact dates and if they need any local help. The second exciting event was the arrival of profiles of six Bulgarian public libraries who would like partners. They have provided information about each of the libraries and we are now looking for partners. I will be sending an e-mail to each of the libraries, asking them specifically what kind of assistance they would like. I'll post the results. If information about one of the libraries strikes your fancy and you feel your library would like to become it's partner, let me know. I'll be glad to help make the connection. History of our school In 1909,the co-ed school of Tryavna was reorganized into the middle school “P.R.Slaveykov”. In 1922-1923, Primary and middle school were united and the name of the new school was T r yavna Primary School “P.R.Slaveykov”. Petko Rachev Slaveykov A center of patriotic ideas, our school educated Bulgarians, such as revolutionary Angel Kanchev,Iconpainter Tsanyo Zahariev, the poet Pencho Slaveykov and the first professor of organic chemistry PenchoNikolov Raykov. The beginning of the 19 th century was difficult for the development of education in our town. During the wars, which Bulgaria took in, the school was used as a hospital. At the end of 1944 the name of “P. R. Slaveykov” Primary School was changed. On 12.X.1944 an uncompleted six-grade high school was opened. On 18.XII.1945 the high school was completed. During1950-1951 the Primary School and Tryavna High-School were united into the National Co-ed School and in1953-1954 its name became the Complete General Education High School. Because of pedagogical mastery in 1956, the school won an award “Cyril and Methodius-first place”. From 1958 the school became an experimental polytechnic school. 1078 students attended 25 classes taught by 45 teachers. VISIBILITY BEYOND THE VISIBLE: AMERICAN TRANSCENDENTALISM AND/IN BULGARIAN CULTURE Albena Bakratcheva web In the process of spiritual emancipation which called forth the political change of 1989, the writings of the American transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau acquired a peculiar, hardly ever expected significance in Bulgaria. His social ideas and the spiritual horizons of his philosophy of life closely corresponded to the painful need of the individual in a so-called "socialist country" for outward and inward emancipation: a need most torturous for the intellectuals, indeed. So, if "there is hardly an ism of our times that has not attempted to adopt Thoreau..." , then it was the "anti-ism" to Bulgarian totalitarianism that provided most of the preconditions for Thoreau's reception in Bulgaria in the last communist decades and especially during our "velvet revolution" and immediately afterwards. The long lasting compulsory spiritual fasting during the years of socialism needed a counterbalance mainly in terms of stressing on the role and the capabilities of the individual. In his inability to face and cope with the intolerable reality every spiritually elevated person found the only way to salvation to be the rediscovery of inward, spiritual spaces; Travelling Towards Oneself , the title of an outstanding Bulgarian novel of the sixties, acquired a symbolic significance for the decades to come. With circumstances like these Thoreau could duly satisfy the urge for spiritual survival. Things being much more complicated, indeed, the fact remains that Civil Disobedience did slip into the publication flow of 1981 and appeared to be one of the first public announcements of the approaching change. Walden, however, never got among these translations until after the political change; with no Bulgarian translation available under totalitarianism, Thoreau's masterpiece acquired even an additional charm of a self-discovered book about self emancipation. Posttotalitarianism was to reveal later on the depths of this uniquely bred Thoreauvian renaissance.
