On November 19th at Manor Farm, Chesham Bois, Louise Jopling-Rowe, wife of George W Rowe.
Funeral Service at St Leonard's Church, Chesham Bois, tomorrow (Wednesday) at 11.45. Train starts from Baker Street at 10.26 for Amersham, not Maryleborne as previously arranged. OBITUARY. The Times, Monday 20th November 1933
Mrs Jopling- Rowe. Artist and Lecturer.
We regret to announce the death of Mrs Louise Jopling-Rowe (Louise Jopling), the well -known artist and lecturer, who died at her home at Amersham, Buckinghamshire, where she had been gravely ill for the last few days. She was 90 years old. Mrs Jopling Rowe was a great social figure in her day, and her life was as full as it was long. She was married three times-at 17 to Mr Romer, a civil servant, from whom she separated on account of his recklessness with financial matters; after his death in 1872 to Mr Middlemore Jopling, ( Joseph 'Joe' Middleton Jopling 1831-1884, friend and boon companion of Millais, watercolourist, and champion rifle shot), also a civil servant who died in 1884; and finally to George W Rowe a lawyer. She was an extremely handsome and vivacious woman, and her jesting tribute to herself in a "parlour game" to the effect that: "He who is in love with Mrs Jopling, Ana be neither fool or fopling," was a fair comment on the effect she made. Millais painted her portrait, which is now in the Tate Gallery, and she was immensely popular in artistic London.

functions. (J. G. M.) SMELT (Osnierus eperlanus; Fr. ~perlan; Scotch sparling or spirling), the common small European fish of the genus Osmerus, family Salmonidae. It breeds, unless land-locked, in salt or brackish water, and though it often enters rivers it does not ascend beyond tidal influence. Like other British Salmonids it spawns in winter. The true smelt inhabits the coasts of northern and central Europe, and allied species are known from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America (Osmerus mordax, 0. thaleichthys, 0. Japonicus). In the next year, another pseudo-Smerdis, named Vahyazdgta, rose against Darius in eastern Persia and met with great success. But he was finally defeated, taken prisoner and executed (Behistun Inscr. ~ 40 if.; perhaps he is identical with the King Maraphis “the Maraphian,” name of a Persian tribe, who occurs as successor in the list of Persian kings given by Aeschylus, Pers. 778). See DARIUS (I.) and PERSIA, Ancient History. (ED. M.) SMILES, SAMUEL (1812—1904), British author, was born at Haddington, Scotland, on the 23rd of December 1812. He was the eldest of eleven children left, on their father’s death, to be supported by their mother on slender means. To her spirit and example must be attributed some of the enthusiasm for selfreliance and self-education, that ‘was later embodied in Dt Smiles’s writings and led to their popularity and influence. Educated at the Haddington Grammar School and at Edinburgh University, where he studied medicine and graduated in 1832 Smiles tried, unsuccessfully, to practise in his native vilIag~ among 3000 healthy Scotsmen and in competition with sever

Samuel Smiles
Author and reformer. Born in Haddington, Smiles took his medical degree at the University of Edinburgh. He practised in Haddington, but later moved to Leeds (England) to become an administrator for the expanding railway network. He is best known for his book Self Help (1859), the essential school prize of Victorian times, which enthused the populous with quotations such as "Heaven helps those who help themselves." He followed this success by Character Thrift (1875) and Duty (1880). He also wrote a biography of the engineer Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834).
