DESCRIPTION:
Spanning 1883 to 1915, the Francis Hopkinson Smith Collection comprises correspondence, writings, and miscellany pertaining to the American author and illustrator (1838-1915). Correspondence includes 25 outgoing Smith letters and 4 incoming items from William Henry Rideing of The Youth's Companion. Four of the letters document an escalating dispute between Smith and agent Major James B. Pond concerning lecture fees. Writings include single typescript pages with extensive holograph revisions of three of Smith's novels, together with a published story bearing his signature. (The manuscript pages originally may have been enclosures with a 1903 Oct. 23 letter to James Carlton Young). Clipped signatures, an inscribed reproduction of a photographic portrait, and printed ephemera, including a periodical issue containing a tribute to F. Hopkinson Smith and booksellers' catalogues and an advertisement, constitute Miscellany. Gift of: Linda Squair, 1994

Architect Francis Hopkinson Smith
F rancis Hopkinson Smith, a noted engineer, artist, and writer, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 23, 1838, the great-grandson of Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Starting life as a shipping clerk in a hardware store, Smith soon became an assistant superintendent of a New York iron foundry during the Civil War. Leaving the foundry, he set himself up as an engineer with a partner, James Symington. On April 26, 1866, Smith married Josephine Van Deventer. Smith's engineering firm was in business for thirty years, contracting many projects with the Federal Government, including the building of the Race Rock Lighthouse, the Block Island Break-water, the sea wall on Staten Island, the foundations for the Statue of Liberty, and the architectural plans for the Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse. In his free time, Smith painted and wrote many notable books, a best seller of which was his novel Caleb West: Master Diver (1898), recounting his construction of the Race Rock Lighthouse. He retired to a life of travel, painting and writing in Spain, Italy, and Constantinople, dying in New York on April 7, 1915.

Biography
Francis Hopkinson Smith
The artist and writer, Francis Hopkinson Smith began his career as a mechanical engineer. Among his important projects is the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. Smith, who was born in Baltimore, began his career as an artist in the early 1870s. He was essentially self-taught. Watercolor, the first medium he explored, became the mainstay of his art throughout his life. By the late 1870s he had moved to New York and become a member of the Tile Club, where he fraternized with the prominent young artists of his day including William Merritt Chase, Winslow Homer, J. Alden Weir, John H. Twachtman, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In the course of his career, Smith traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Turkey, and Mexico. Venice, Holland, and Spain were among his favorite painting grounds, and he wrote and illustrated articles and books about these localities. Indeed, Smith was also a prominent and highly successful author. He wrote twelve novels and numerous books and magazine articles. After the turn of the century, he began to work in an Impressionist style. His works were collected by important patrons including John Jacob Astor, Charles E Havermeyer, Isabella Stewart Gardner, and William Thompson Walters.
