American Landscapes Of The Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries From its beginnings through the Civil War, American landscape painting had reflected either of two separate aspects of English painting: the dramatic contrasts of Romanticism or the site-specific detail of the topographical tradition. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, however, as Americans fell under the spell of French painting, new ideas about the appearance of the painted surface, light effects, and design were employed to create a mood which now became the subject of their paintings. The most compelling artists working in this period are recognizable by their personal and distinctive interpretations of nature. In their most successful works, every aspect contributes to an expressive whole, original and appealing in its total effect. George Inness, in whose work I specialize, is for me the most convincingly original landscape painter of his generation. Other outstanding artists of this period, Abbott Thayer, Dwight Tryon, William Picknell and Alexander Wyant, also created works that are both distinctive and memorable.

We proudly stand behind our troops overseas! tg78feb - F. Hopkinson Smith-West Gate, Warwick View more images Price: $ 15.00 This is a picture of a rainy day scene by F. Hopkinson Smith-signature in the lower lefthand corner. It measures 9-3/8" x 6-3/4" and is attached to a larger, more heavy-duty piece of paper which measures 12" x 15", there is a piece of onionskin paper 12" x 15" which covers the print to protect it. On the front of the onionskin paper the title is centered which reads WEST GATE, WARWICK F. Hopkinson Smith. This is one of six similar pictures that I purchased a few years ago and had stored until now-I am not familiar with this type of art but have found out that Francis Hopkinson Smith lived from 1838-1915, he was a writer and an artist and also the engineer who designed the foundation for the Statue of Liberty! There is not much color in this picture-mostly grays. Perhaps it was taken from an old magazine? Thanks for looking! Item Number:

Maryland Authors
The Maryland Collection is a rich source for the study of Maryland literature, which can be defined as prose and poetry written by authors closely associated with the state. Although most Maryland writers have never limited themselves solely to Maryland themes or settings, many of the titles by lesser known authors in the collection have a more local flavor. Maryland authors who have achieved a more national reputation are also well-represented in the collection, including Francis Scott Key, Edgar Allan Poe, H.L. Mencken, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James M. Cain, John Barth, Anne Tyler, and Tom Clancy. Email the subject area specialist specialist or call (301) 405-9210 for more information. Highlights of the collection include:
  • Brasseya Johnson Allen's Pastorals (1806), the first published collection of poetry by a Maryland woman
  • Swallow Barn Rob of the Bowl (1838) and other novels by John Pendleton Kennedy (1795-1870)
  • Poetry and dramatic works by Edward Coote Pinckney (1802-1828), George Henry Calvert (1803-1889), George Henry Miles (1824-1871), Samuel J. Donaldson (1835-1872), John Banister Tabb (1856-1909), Folger McKinsey (1866-1910), Henry Randolph Latimer (1871-1944), and others
