SMITH, ERMIE
Thomas Smith and Mary Ermie (not sure of spelling) had at least two daughters. One was Julie Smith b.1824, the other Nancy Smith also b. 1824. Julie married Jordan Sanders b. 1814. I am looking for information on Thomas and Mary. It is possible they may have been Cherokee/Catawba mixed descent. Any info. greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

Ryegate Cemetery and Ryegate Catholic Cemetery The original list was provided by long-time Ryegate resident, Millie Schanz it originated as a school project one of her grandchildren was involved in. There are two cemeteries at Ryegate, the Ryegate Cemetery and the Catholic Cemetery. The students visited both to gather headstone information. Rather than split the original list into two cemetery lists, the same coding used for the school project was used here:
    Ryegate Cemetery = P; Catholic Cemetery = C.
Millie Schanz and Fay Durham Hoffman have also provided additional information after the school project ended.
If you have photos you would like to have linked to this site, please contact me, I will be happy to scan them and return them to you.
If you use this list and find it useful, please email your thanks to Millie Schanz as she got me started on the project. This list is incomplete, please check back for updates. Please email corrections, additions or

The following is a list of known artists of the Finger Lakes area of Central New York State covering late 18th C. to about the mid 20th C. The list was originally started from the West Lake Conservators data base of paintings treated since 1975 and has additions from artists known to local historical societies and museums from Rochester to Utica and also contains information from Cayuga County History 1789-1879 Who Was Who in American Art New York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America and Dr. Howard S. Merritt of the University of Rochester. Further information is available on request. Please send e-mail to West Lake Conservators or to John Sutton . Additions and comments are welcome. I hope this is of some help to anyone researching regional artists or to those of you who have found signed paintings and are now wondering if the artist is known. Links:

As published in The German Connection
Each of the following listings shows the direct ancestral lineage through the male line of one individual with a Germanic surname. Each direct line is of the format: Surname, [submitter number], (1) given name, (birth-death dates), place of birth, marriage, death or residence (as indicated by b,m,d, or res), surname of wife; (2) given name of father of (1), (birth-death dates), place of b, m, d, or res, surname of spouse; (3) given name of father of (2). . . etc. If the wife has a Germanic surname it may be followed as a separate direct line. An asterisk (*) indicates an immigrant. A question mark (?) indicates information not known. Surnames are not repeated within one direct line unless there is a spelling or name change. Submitters would like to correspond with those sharing their lines or those who would like more information.
When the listings were printed in The German Connection
