A Listing of the FINAL RESTING PLACES for the men of the th MISSISSIPPI INFANTRY 1600+ men fought under the flag of the 17th Mississippi Infantry Regiment from April 1861 to April 1865. In the Battle at Gettysburg alone, the 17th Mississippi Infantry suffered losses enough to make it one of the four most seriously damaged Confederate Regiments in the Army of Northern Virginia. Some reports indicate that 65% of the men who left Mississippi in May of 1861 to go to Virginia did not return and lie buried in other states. This listing will provide names and places of some of these HONORED DEAD. Brigadier General William Barksdale - died July 3rd, 1863 in Gettysburg, PA. Originally buried in the back of the Hummelbaugh House, he was disinterred in 1865 and brought home to Mississippi. William Barksdale was laid to rest following two funeral services, one religious and one Masonic. Although family history indicates that General Barksdale was buried in Troy Mississippi (near Columbus), the Jackson Clarion indicates that he is at his rest in Greenwood cemetery, Jackson, Mississippi.
