SMITH, HENRY PRESERVED
ic was a professor in Amherst College, and in 1907 became 3 Tofessor in the Meadville (Pennsylvania) Theological School. He published The Bible and Islam (1897), Commentary on the 3ooks of Samuel (1899, in the " International Critical Commentary ") and Old Testament History (1903, in the " International Theologica) ^ibrary"). In Inspiration and Inerrancy (Cincinnati, 1893), he eprinted the papers on which the heresy charge was made, ano" outlined the case. SMITH, JOHN (1579-1631), usually distinguished as Captain John Smith, sometime president of the English colony in Virginia, was the elder son of George Smith, a well-to-do tenant-farmer on the estate of Lord Willoughby d'Eresby at Willoughby, near Alford in Lincolnshire. The life of this Virginian hero falls conveniently into five periods. The first of these, up to 1596, that of his early youth, is thus described by himself in his Travels: "He was born (1579) in Willoughby in Lincolnshire, and was a scholar in the two free schools of Alford and Louth. 1 The particulars of the authorship are given in the 18th edition (1820), and in the memoir of his brother by Horace prefixed to a collection of fugitive pieces (1840). James contributed the first stanza to the imitation of Byron, but otherwise they worked independently. •

It is a significant commentary on the changes in literary fashions that we should be puzzled as to the source of a motto for a tale which Poe neglected to identify probably because he assumed that every reader would know it — in one of Smith's sketches. Below the original title of "How to Write a Blackwood Article," namely, "The Signora Zenobia," first published in the American Museum of December 1838, he wrote: "'In the name of the Prophet — figs!!'
