Poetry Rules!!!
(but, then we already knew that!)
Robert Oxnam, Director Emeritus of the Asia Society, has stated that among the notions which influence Chinese poetry there is the idea that "a poem is a place where one's deepest emotions are felt." Additionally, Chinese poetry is a commentary on life at the time the poet lived and a reflection of the poet's personality. Finally, poetry reveals the poet's "moral fiber" and allows the poet to live beyond his or her time. The poem below illustrates these things and also the interaction between Confucianism and Daoism. It also gives the reader a glimpse of the wonderful Chinese sense of humor. The second poem is Korean and very contemporary. Although the Koreans may not have been writing poetry quite as long as the Chinese, they have been at it for over 2000 years. The Korean poem below reflects three of the themes that recur again and again in Korean poetry, namely: love, time and change.
Here are some brief reflections of some pretty amazing people on the subject of poetry.

CAINE MSS COLL 19
Collection 19 contains those petitions and affidavits relating to Mormon difficulties in Missouri from 1831 to 1839 that were submitted to the House Judiciary Committee seeking redress for damages done in Missouri. The Collection was obtained from the National Archives in the Spring of 1990. In filing the papers, original filing order has been preserved. Each affidavit or petition was handled separately, ad the following series of container lists and indices provide access to various names, geographical locations, and post-Missouri residences of the Mormon population. Though the affidavits and petitions were initially collected because of the Mormon expulsion from Caldwell and Daviess counties, a significant number also detail Mormon difficulties in other northern Missouri counties during the so-called Mormon War of 1838-1839. One of the surprising things about the affidavits, ostensibly sworn to elicit action from Congress for losses during the Mormon War is the number (and the detailed accounts within that number) of affidavits dealing with the Mormon expulsion from Jackson County in 1833 and again in 1834 after some Mormons returned to the County (see affidavits of Charles Hulet and James B.F. Page). A description of the collection and an analysis of the contents of it is to be found in Paul C. Richards, "Missouri Persecutions: Petitions for Redress,"

[JAMES] MORRISON HARRIS PAPERS MS. 2739 Maryland Historical Society Baltimore MD 21201-4674 Biographical Sketch of [James] Morrison Harris [James] Morrison Harris was born 20 November 1817 in Baltimore City to Colonel David Harris, a merchant, and Sarah (Montgomery) Harris. Educated at various private institutions in Baltimore, he entered Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, in 1833 but left in 1835 because of an eye infection that threatened blindness. A student of the Classics, he first took clerical positions in Baltimore and Norfolk after leaving school. It was through his employment as a bank clerk that he made the acquaintance of David Stewart, a Baltimore lawyer, who persuaded him to study law in the attorney's office. Mr. Harris was admitted to the Baltimore Bar on 4 May 1843 and the High Court of Chancery in Annapolis, Maryland, on 8 July of the same year. Then, in 1844, he toured Europe in order to arrest his ailing health. His first case was the McCurry trial of March, 1845, in which he appeared as counsel for Henry McCurry [M'Curry] who was accused and convicted of the murder of Paul Roux. Later, he served as counsel along with Joseph H. Bradley for Surgeon-General William A. Hammond in the U.S. government's case against the physician in 1864.
