Smith, Horatio 1775-1839, English parodists, brothers. They wrote the famous Rejected Addresses (1812) which burlesqued such contemporary poets as Wordsworth, Scott, Coleridge, and Byron. James Smith, who produced the better pieces, never wrote anything of value afterward. Horatio Smith was the author of several novels, including Brambletye House (1826), an imitation of Scott. Horace in London (1813) was a collection of their early work.

General Notes: The various tax lists, census and court records support my grandfather's story that his mother, Polly Majors, daughter of Thomas Majors and Phebe Leffew, was part Cherokee Indian. Research Notes: While it was certainly a challenge to attempt to sort out the details for Joseph, Elisha and Elihu, the three sons of Stephen Lephew who moved to Grainger Co., TN from Rockingham Co., NC some years after the death of their father about 1801, that challenge pales in comparison to the difficulty of determining the identities of their children. For some, the evidence of paternity is fairly strong, but for others it is no more than an educated guess, while for the rest it is a toss-up.
The main problem is determining how many children each had and what were their approximate ages. Except for adult children who appear in the 1830 census, census records are either nonexistent or too confusing to be of much help in answering these questions.
