JOSEPH SMITH Founder of The Mormons, born in Sharon , Vermont. He received his first "call' as a prophet at Manchester, New York, in 1820. Smith said he was told of a sacred religious record on golden plates, with two stones which would help to translate it, and in 1827 this was delivered into his hands. The Book of Mormon (1830) is said to contain a history of the 5th century of the Christian era, written by a prophet named Mormon, during which Jesus Christ appeared and established his Church in the New World. Smith claimed to have received authority from John the Baptist and the apostles to be the instrument of the Church's re-establishment. Despite ridicule and hostility, the new "Church of the Latter Day Saints" rapidly gained converts. He founded Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1840, becoming mayor. Violence followed his announcement as a candidate for the US presidency. He was imprisoned for conspiracy and killed by a mob which broke into the jail in Carthage, Illinois, where he and his brother Hyram were awaiting trial. August 2001: An e-publication of the New England Institute for Religious Research Religion "Made in America" The Paradox of Joseph Smith and Mormonism Mormonism, known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (with headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah), was officially founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844). While living in Palmyra New York, Smith claimed at the age of 15 to have had a personal visit from God, who introduced him to Christ. Jesus supposedly told him not to join any church because they were "all wrong ... all their creeds were an abomination in His sight, and that those professors (Christians) were all corrupt" (Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith, 2:18-19). Smith was allegedly told by God that he was chosen to restore the true church that the apostles had founded, and to bring to light "many plain and precious" truths of the scriptures that had been altered or expunged from the Scriptures. Three years later, Smith claimed that he was visited by the angel "Moroni" who revealed to him the whereabouts of certain plates of gold which were alleged to be the scriptures and sacred writings of the inhabitants of the Americas. Smith unearthed the plates, and in 1827 began the process of translating them from a language he called "Reformed Egyptian" to English. Thus, from this, he produced the Book of Mormon, which was published in 1830.

Joseph SMITH Smith, Joseph (1805-1844) , American religious leader, who was the founding prophet of Mormonism. Smith was born of poor parents in Sharon, Vermont, on December 23, 1805. The family moved near the town of Palmyra, in upstate New York, where between the ages of 14 and 25 Smith experienced visions calling him to restore the true Christian religion. According to his account, an angel guided him to a set of golden plates buried in a hill near the Smith farm; these contained a narrative written in a hieroglyphic script, which he translated, "by the gift and power of God." The result was published in 1830 as the Book of Mormon, which he believed to be a religious record of the ancient inhabitants of North America. The church Smith founded on April 6, 1830, soon known officially as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, quickly attracted followers, many of whom served as lay missionaries. It also aroused opposition, with Smith as its focus. He suffered a violent tarring and feathering in Ohio and a jail term of several months in Missouri. After establishing a new headquarters at Commerce (which they renamed Nauvoo), Illinois, in 1839, Smith continued to provide charismatic leadership. Soon, however, rumors, later confirmed, that the Mormons had begun to practice polygamy provoked a schism in the Mormon community and intensified the opposition outside the church. Smith himself is believed to have had more than 27 wives, although he publicly acknowledged only one.

His family of origin were called " Seekers " - Christians who were not affiliated with a church, but which respected the teachings of all denominations. Mormons were persecuted in New York, Ohio, Missouri and in Illinois during the formative years of their history. The growing opposition in western Illinois led to the murder of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum in June 1844, and further confrontations forced Mormon leaders to decide to abandoned Nauvoo and to migrate into the American West. This exodus began in February 1846 under the direction of Brigham Young and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles who had assumed leadership of the Church following Joseph Smith's death.
