Signed "A. Van Buren." The prolific Sedgwick was the first of the "literary domestics," American women novelists of the mid-nineteenth century who also included Fanny Fern, Lydia Maria Child, and Maria Susanna Cummins. Their works were hugely popular and known for their sentimentality and devotion to home and family, featuring heroines who struggle through domestic difficulties, improve their characters, and find true love and the inevitable happy ending. These were the writers who prompted Nathaniel Hawthorne's notorious comment, in an 1855 letter to his publisher, that "America is now wholly given over to a dd mob of scribbling women." Despite her success, Sedgwick had a fear of public attention and published anonymously throughout her career. This volume, an epistolary work which, like Cooper's, includes observations on travels in the Alps and in Italy, was published as "by the author of 'Hope Leslie,' 'The Poor Rich Man and the Rich Poor Man,' 'Live and Let Live,' etc." Grace Aguilar, 1816-1847

Reading Wilde, Querying Spaces: Part 2
    Oscar Wilde's Epigrammatic Theater
Oscar Wilde won his greatest literary fame in the theater, and his chosen mode of expression was the epigram a form which allowed him to flaunt his style and sophisticated mastery of life and literature. It is well known that Wilde's plays have epigrams liberally sprinkled throughout them, but it is important to realize the extent to which the epigram shapes Wilde's dramatic structure and themes. Wilde's epigrams invoke a response and then frustrate it. For example, a character in The Importance of Being Earnest While this has left Wilde open to charges of being a mere theatrical manipulator, it is in fact central to the type of theater Wilde wanted to create: a space in which the audience is allowed to recognize the rules of literary and theatrical history, and to share the pleasure of watching those rules circumvented. Wilde thus shares the pleasure of being in an elitist community with his audience, establishing an alternate aristocracy of the "ins" and "outs," with knowledge not money or birth required for membership. This is the pleasure of Wilde's epigrammatic theater. Francesca Coppa

SYDNEY S. MCCARVER born Note: I was just wondering if the " S . " in Sydney S. McCarver stood for Smith. And wondered if he was named after Sydney Smith the English Clergyman. Son of John M. McCarver Sydney Smith
(1771-1845) born on Jun 6 English clergyman, essayist. He was a leading preacher of his day who championed Catholic emancipation in "Letters of Peter Plymley," 1807 Sydney S. McCarver was born in either Illinois or Missouri ( census say both) in 1838. In 1850 he is living with his father John M. McCarver and John's new wife Mrs. Margaret Canada Johnston Stubblefield.
Sydney was found next in Perry County , Illinois on May 12th. 1871 where he was being sued by Rachel L. Willis. She does not appear in court and the case was dropped. There was record on which the suit was based. Next we find him in Washington County , Illinois in 1880 with wife Mary J. and children , and while there he had made a land deal with George Charity in 1881. We found a marriage record in Washington Co. for a Archibald McCarver in 1874 , we feel this might be Sydney's older brother. Sydney then moves to St. Clair County , Illinois where he is found in 1900. Sydney/Sidney S. died in December of 1917 in St. Clair County. Mary J. died in 1921 at age 92 yrs.

    Question: What are Chilling Effects?
Answer: "Chilling Effects" refers to the deterrent effect of legal threats or posturing, largely cease and desist letters independent of litigation, on lawful conduct. The Chilling Effects clearinghouse will catalogue cease and desist notices and present analyses of their claims to help recipients resist the chilling of legitimate activities (as well as understand when their activities are unlawful). The project's core, this database of letters and FAQ-style analyses is supplemented by legal backgrounders, news items, and pointers to statutes and caselaw. Periodic "weather reports" will sum up the legal climate for online activity.
Question: What is the Chilling Effects clearinghouse?
Answer: The project invites recipients and senders of cease and desist notices to send them to a central point (here, at

    Addison, Joseph
The eldest son of a cleric, Addison eventually found himself at Oxford (Queen's and Magdalen). He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought." ... Columns A Place to Call Ho me June 17, 2002 British author Sydney Smith (1771-1845) once wrote, "A comfortable house is a great source of happiness. It ranks immediately after health and a good conscience." Years have past since these words were written, but they still ring true today as we celebrate "National Homeownership Month" during the month of June. Homeownership is an important part of the American Dream. For many families, a home is not merely shelter, but also provides an opportunity for growth, prosperity and security. Homeownership - a common and shared dream for millions of our citizens - unites us as a people and as a nation. Studies have shown that homeownership leads to more close-knit neighborhoods with stronger schools and a more involved citizenry. For this reason, every family must have the opportunity to share this part of the American Dream.
