Thomas Henry Huxley Papers
(ca. 270 items,.5 linear foot) B H981 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was an eminent Victorian-era biologist, best known as a passionate defender and popularizer of Darwin's theory of evolution. His partisanship earned him the nickname of "Darwin's Bulldog," although he did not accept the theory uncritically. In addition to his work in biology, he did original research in zoology and paleontology. He is also remembered as the progenitor of a family of highly successful scientists and thinkers. This collection is made up of letters, primarily written by Huxley, on a variety of topics including the age of man, evolution, education, natural history, science, geology, spiritualism, and vivisection. The most voluminous correspondence is with Sir James Thomas Knowles (30 letters) and with Huxley's daughter, Ethel Huxley Collier, "Babs," (44 items).). The 30 letters to Knowles appear in neither the Life and Letters

Archaeology, Christian
That branch of the science of archreology which has for its ultimate object the study of ancient Christian life, as inferred from the remains of the Christian monuments (supplemented by literature, objects of art, etc.) erected during the first six centuries of the Christian era. The Roman catacombs are the great treasure-house of the monuments of primitive Christianity; the Bible is the first indispensable literary source. Many Catholics and other Christians have made valuable researches in the field of Christian archaeology.
Catholics
Paul Allard ) Had a minute knowledge of Christian archreology, especially in regard to the Roman catacombs. He translated Northcote and Brownlow's Roma Sotterranea ) and enriched it with valuable notes and additions.
Flavio Biondo ) Secretary of Pope Eugellius IV, was the author of a valuable study of the ancient monuments of Rome.
Antonio Hosio ) Known as the Columbus of the Catacombs and the Father of Christian Archaeology , was the first to begin the systematic exploration of the Roman cemeteries. After his death the results of his investigations were edited by the Oratorian Severano and published at the expense of the Order of Malta under the title of Roma Sotterranea

Antichrist
Smith's Bible Dictionary
by Sir William Smith [1813-1893], D.C.L., LL.D.,
An’tichrist. This term is employed by the apostle John alone, and is defined by him in a manner which leaves no doubt as to its intrinsic meaning. With regard to its application there is less certainty. In the first passage (1 John 2:18) in which it occurs, the apostle makes direct reference to the false Christs whose coming, it had been fore-told, should mark the last days. In v. 22 we find, "he is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son;" and still more positively, "every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of antichrist." Comp. (2 John 1:7) From these emphatic and repeated definitions it has been supposed that the object of the apostle in his first epistle was to combat the errors of Cerinthus, the Docetae and the Gnostics on the subject of the Incarnation. (They denied the union of the divine and human in Christ.) E-Mail Greg
