9. Sousa, John Philip (1854-1932)
John Philip Sousa (18541932). Just as Johann Strauss, Jr., is knowneverywhere as The Waltz King, John Philip Sousa is The March
http://cwx.prenhall.com/bookbind/pubbooks/masterworks/medialib/timelines/10ameri
John Philip Sousa Just as Johann Strauss, Jr., is known everywhere as "The Waltz King," John Philip Sousa is "The March King." The child of immigrant parents, he began his career in the United States Marine Band (1868-75), then played professionally in theater orchestras. For the Marine Band, which he was called to direct in 1880, he composed the majority of his most memorable marches. On retiring that position in 1892 he organized his own band and led it on tours throughout the world (Chicago World's Fair, 1894; Paris Exposition of 1900; world tour 1910-11). His march The Gladiator was for a time the best-selling publication in the history of American music; Stars and Stripes Forever became the official march of the United States by a 1987 act of Congress. Sousa was also a decent composer of operettas. In his 60s, ever a patriot, he responded to World War I by enlisting as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve. The stand-inside-the-coils tuba called the Sousaphone was built following his design and is now used by marching bands everywhere. And the Sousa march, with its two strains, trio, and "dogfight" became as influential a national genre as jazz. Back to Timeline

Hij componeerde ca. 100 marsen (The Washington Post; The Stars and stripes for ever) en elf operettes.

The widespread musical influence of John Philip Sousa through his compositions, transcriptions of music for band, and his literary efforts affected musical thought and practice worldwide. As director of the United States Marine Band from 1880-1892, Sousa developed "The President's Own" into an outstanding performing organization. After leaving the Marine Band in 1892 to direct his own professional touring band, Sousa was always aware that he was a musical ambassador for the United States and described himself as "Salesman of Americanism, globetrotter, and musician."
The University of Illinois Connection
Due to the presence of the Sousa Band performance collection, the University of Illinois is one of the few places that John Philip Sousa's music may be studied and understood as he actually intended it. The 3,400 titles of published and manuscript music are housed in the Harding Band Building in a suite of rooms especially designed to accommodate the collection. Over 120 holograph manuscript scores and music sketches penned by the "March King" may be found in the University of Illinois Sousa materials, as well as the band parts to his " Stars and Stripes Forever ," declared the National March of the United States by an Act of Congress in December 1987.

John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) Washington, Estados Unidos
Obras:
Semper Fidelis
Washington Post March (1889)
Stars and Stripes Forever
King Cotton (1897)
Biografía:
Director y compositor estadounidense. © eMe
