c16 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm plus guide Part 2 covers the papers of James Augustus Grant (1827-1892) and related material by John Hanning Speke (1827-1864) from the National Library of Scotland. Like Burton, Grant began his colonial career in India, joining the Bengal Army in 1848. He was present at the siege of Multan, the Battle of Gujerat and at the Relief of Lucknow. Grant used his army career as a springboard for entry into the world of exploration and in 1860 he was seconded to join the Royal Geographical Society's expedition under John Hanning Speke to discover the source of the Nile. Later he saw service in Kashmir and he joined Napier's Abyssinian expedition. All aspects of Grant's career are covered in these papers. Some of the richest sections are: - Grant's Journals, 1846, 1848-1849, 1852-1854, 1858-1891, which describe life in Britain, India and Africa.
- Grant's family correspondence, in which he freely speaks his mind.

John Hanning Speke (1827-1864)
James Augustus Grant (1827-1892)
John Hanning Speke, who had already fought in the British army in India, first became an explorer in 1854, when he joined Richard Burton on a voyage of exploration to Somaliland and eastern Ethiopia. When in 1856 Burton was again sent out to Africa, this time to search for the source of the Nile in East Africa, he again chose Speke as his second-in-command. Together they discovered Lake Tanganyika, and while Burton lay ill, Speke on his own discovered Lake Victoria. For more on these voyages, see Richard Burton Speke was back in England before Burton. Although Speke had promised Burton not to publish anything about their discoveries until the latter had arrived as well, Roderick Murchison, the chairman of the Royal Geographical Society , gave out a press conference immediately after Speke's arrival, and when Burton reached England, Speke had already made their voyage famous, and had been appointed the leader of a new expedition to the area. Burton was bittered, especially because Speke proclaiming that Lake Victoria was the source of the Nile, while Burton himself believed that there was a whole series of lakes which all were sources of the Nile. The new expedition was prepared carefully. Speke chose James Augustus Grant, a friend from his army days, as his companion, while John Petherick, the British consul in Khartoum, was ordered to send ships upstream the Nile to Gondokoro to aid the explorers in their voyage back home. Speke and Grant left England in April 1860, and sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to Zanzibar, where they arrived in August. On October 2 they started their voyage to the inlands of Africa.

African explorers Who's who, where they went, and when. Related Resources Exploration of Africa
Even in the 18th century, much of the interior of Africa was unfamiliar to Europeans. Rather they limited themselves to trade along the coast, first in gold, ivory, spices, and later slaves. In 1788 Joseph Banks, the botanist who'd sailed across the Pacific Ocean with Cook, went as far as to found the African Association to promote the exploration of the interior of the continent. What follows is a list of those explorers whose names went down in history. Ibn Battuta (1304-1377) travelled over 100,000 kilometres from his home in Morocco. According to the book he dictated, he travelled as far as Beijing and the Volga River; scholars say it's unlikely he travelled everywhere he claims to have.

AT THE ZOO: The Snorting Gazelle
by Debra Solomon

John Hanning Speke (1827-1864) was a British explorer most famousand infamousfor his lifelong quest to find the source of the Nile. In 1858, Speke declared East Africa's Lake Victoria the Nile's source and returned to England a heroonly to find that his colleague and fellow explorer Sir Richard Burton challenged his claim. On the day Speke and Burton were to debate the issue in public, however, Speke died while hunting, apparently killed by his own gun. In spite of the cloud surrounding Speke's claim, his discovery was quickly confirmed after his death. But finding the source of the Nile wasn't the only legacy Speke left. He also left his mark on the names of several East African animals he was first to describe to the West, including Speke's weaver, a small bird, and Speke's gundi, a rodent. One of Speke's most graceful "finds" was Speke's gazelle, four of which recently arrived at the National Zoo, where they now live at the Cheetah Conservation Station. Small and delicate, Speke's gazelles are brown, dog-sized antelope with white patches around the bases of their tails and on the backs of their thighs. They are found in the wild on the dry open plains of Somalia and Ethiopia. Adapted to a desert climate, they feed in the morning and evening, when leaves hold the most moisture, and lie around during the hottest times of the day, conserving precious water.
