Januar 1711 eingestellt. An seine Stelle trat die bekanntere Zeitschrift

Addison and Steele
Collaborators on The Tatler and The Spectator Joseph Addison (1672-1719) Addison was born in Milston, Wiltshire and later educated at Salisbury, the Charterhouse, and finally at Queen's College, Oxford. After five years at Oxford, Addison left to travel Europe and earned a reputation as a great gentleman whose only fault was a weakness for wine and an occasional smoke. Finding himself without a job at 33 years old, he was asked to write a poem about the Duke of Marlborough's victory of Blenheim. The poem was so well liked by the Whig party that he was named Vice Commissioner of appeals and later Under-Secretary of State (Gibbs). Joseph Addison died in 1719 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. "It is as a tatler of small talk and a spectator of mankind that we cherish and love him, and owe as much pleasure to him as to any human being who ever wrote. He came in that artificial age, and began to speak with his noble, natural voice. He came, the gentle artist, who hit no unfair blows; the kind judge, who castigates only in smiling," wrote Thackeray in The Coverly Papers.

Introductory Note
Sir Richard Steele (1672-1729), Addison`s chief collaborator in the "Tatler" and the "Spectator," was born in Dublin of an English father and an Irish mother. He made Addison`s acquaintance at school, and they were at Oxford together. Steele left the University to enter the army, and opened his literary career, while still a soldier, with "The Christian Hero." In 1702 he began to write for the stage, and was of notable influence in redeeming the English drama from the indecency which had marked much of it since the Restoration. Like Addison, he combined politics with literature, and in 1715 was knighted as a reward for his services to the Hanoverian party.
The chief glory of the "Spectator" is, of course, the club, and it was in the essay which follows that Steele first sketched the characters composing it. The Spectator himself was Addison`s creation, and Addison also elaborated Sir Roger, though Steele originated him. Whatever may be the respective claims of Addison and Steele to the credit for the success of the "Spectator," it is to Steele that the honor belongs of having founded its predecessor, the "Tatler," and so of originating the periodical essay.
Steele was a warm - hearted, impulsive man, full of sentiment, improvident, and somewhat weak of will. These qualities are reflected in his writings, which are inferior to Addison`s in grace and finish, but are marked by greater spontaneity and invention. Probably no piece of writing of equal length has added so many portraits to the gallery of our literature as the first sketch of the Spectator Club which is here printed.

  • The Tatter was issued three times a week at a cost of one penny per issue; its attempt was to educate the new middle class in manners and morals.
    "The Spectator Club"
In this issue Steele introduces the members of the Spectator Club. These members represent most middle and upper class occupations. They seem to have an attitude to cover every possible occasion, and they satirize some of the foibles of 18th century London society. In addition to Mr. Spectator, the members of the Club include Sir Andrew Freeport, a lawyer, Sir Roger DeCoverly, Captain Sentry, Will Honeycomb, and a clergyman. 2. Which member was described as an honest and worthy man where women are not concerned? 3. Which member had the misfortune of a weak constitution, and hence could not accept the cares of his office? 4.
