After studying at Charterhouse and Oxford, he entered the army in 1694 and rose to the rank of captain by 1700. His first book, a moral tract entitled The Christian Hero, appeared in 1701. The same year saw a production of his first play, The Funeral, a sentimental comedy, which he followed with two more comedies, The Lying Lover (1703) and The Tender Husband (1705). In 1722 he produced his last and most important play, The Conscious Lovers. Tatler (1709-11), the writing of which was soon joined by his close friend Joseph Addison . This was followed by the Spectator (1711-12), the Guardian (1713), and later periodicals of lesser importance. The partnership of Steele and Addison was one of the most successful in the history of English letters. Although they differed greatly in temperament, their aims and tastes were in the main united. They were Whig partisans, and sympathetic with the moral attitude of the rapidly growing middle class. Although Steele's prose lacks the polished grace of Addison's, his writing reflects his charm, spontaneity, wit, and imagination. In 1713, Steele carried on a celebrated political controversy with Swift, the chief Tory spokesman, in the course of which he wrote his pamphlet The Crisis.

Richard Brinsley Sheridan John Vanbrugh 1664-1726 John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) has a high reputation both as an architect and as a playwright. As the former, he designed a number of famous and illustrious buildings, including Blenheim Palace, Castle Howard and the first great London opera house in the Haymarket. As the latter, he completed two brilliant, original comedies, The Relapse: or Virtue in Danger (1696) and The Provok'd Wife (1697), as well as a host of translations and adaptations. As if these two professions were not enough, Vanbrugh managed to combine mastership of these with a respectable career as a soldier. Such a multi-faceted career was less unusual at that time than nowadays. The educated elite were small in number and likely to be well-connected, so those with ability found it easier to gain recognition than they would do today. A multi-talented man thus had a reasonable chance of making a name for himself in several fields. Vanbrugh was first inspired to write for the stage by the production of Colley Cibber's sentimental play

Sir Richard Steele (1672-1729) was born in Dublin, and became the most celebrated essayist and playwright of his era. He was educated at Charterhouse (while Addison attended), and went to Merton College, Oxford. He briefly entered the army, and reacted to the military life by taking up writing. He quickly authored three successful comedies; served as gentleman waiter to Prince George of Denmark; and in 1707 became an editor of the London Gazette. Steele recognized the enormous possibilities of periodical literature distributed by post-coaches, and founded (with Addison) two of the greatest efforts of that genre. The 'Tatler' (1709-1711) and the 'Spectator' (1711-1712) exposed the affectations, conceits, vices, and corruptions of all levels of society to the derision of humorous satire and comedic caricature. Along with moral, literary, and political comments we can find here too the beginnings of the modern novel. In 1713 Steele entered parliament, but was expelled the following year because of his pamphleteering and publishing in support of the House of Hanover. Upon the succession of George I he was rewarded for his attachment to that cause with a knighthood, and supervision of the Drury Lane Theatre. After disagreements with Addison, who was in the ministry, he lost his office, and retired to Wales.

He became a Fellow at Trinity College, Dean of Derry, and Bishop of Cloyne. His book Principles of Human Knowledge in 1716 gained a reputation for his eloquent style of rhetoric. His main beliefs were the existence of God, the immortality of the soul and the freedom of humanity. Other works include 'Essays towards a New Theory of Vision'(1709), 'Alciphron or the Minute Philosopher'(1732),'The Analyst'(1734), 'The Querist'(1735) and 'Siris'(1732). Berkeley was held in high regard as a philosopher even before the age of thirty. His rejection of the materialist conception of abstract ideas, together with his strong religious beliefs, lent a grounded, realistic tone to his philosophical writing.
