In 1722 he produced his last and most important play, The Conscious Lovers. Tatler Addison . This was followed by the Spectator Guardian (1713), and later periodicals of lesser importance. The partnership of Steele and Addison was one of the most successful in the history of English letters. Although they differed greatly in temperament, their aims and tastes were in the main united. They were Whig partisans, and sympathetic with the moral attitude of the rapidly growing middle class. Although Steele's prose lacks the polished grace of Addison's, his writing reflects his charm, spontaneity, wit, and imagination. In 1713, Steele carried on a celebrated political controversy with Swift, the chief Tory spokesman, in the course of which he wrote his pamphlet The Crisis.

Modern workshops consist of wider buildings of greater height with plenty of roof-light, efficient ventilation, and artificial heating, and as the heavy loads can be carried by the reinfrcing material, heavy walls become unnecessary. Gradually, therefore, the modern steel-framed factory has been evolved, capable of supporting all the loads, the outer walls being required only for protection against weather. Light steel roof trusses have replaced the timber trusses, and with the columns form a rigid framework to resist the structural and wind loads as well as those from the cranes and shafting. In Germany skeleton steel-framed factory buildings may be erected with half brick (12 cm.), with a restriction that when such buildings are abutting or are in the immediate neighbourhood, i.e. within 20 ft. of a neighbouring building, the outside walls on the sides affected shall be full brick (25 cm.). The permissible height to which a building may be erected on the continent of Europe depends largely on the breadth of the road on which such buildings are situated. Sir Richard Steele, [from] The Tatler , no. 169, May 9, 1710 In the first decades of the eighteenth century, Richard Steele (1672 - 1729) and Joseph Addison produced the hugely influential journals, The Tatler and The Spectator . Written for an audience drawn largely from the middle ranks of society, the larger task of these journals was to create a ‘polite’ society in which social divisions based on wealth and rank would be eased by a shared set of cultural values and an agreed code of behaviour. Implicit in such writing is a plea for the reform of the aristocracy after the perceived excesses of the Restoration. In The Spectator , the figure of Sir Roger de Coverley appears as a quirky but admirable throwback to an earlier generation of patrician country gentleman (see nos. 106-23): Sir Roger keeps a firm but benevolent grip on his tenants, ensures they attend church, looks to their needs, and in seeing his estate as more than a set of rights and rents creates an idyllic country community. In the extract from The Tatler which we reproduce here, Steele goes a step further by providing us with an aristocratic landlord who avoids even Sir Roger’s quirks. RICHARD STEELE ( Sir Richard Steele, journalist, dramatist, miscellaneous writer, was born in Dublin, the son of Richard Steele, an attorney, and Elinor (Sheyles) Symes. His father died when Richard was five and his mother soon after; his uncle, Henry Gascoigne, secretary to the first Duke of Ormonde, became his guardian. He entered the Charterhouse in 1684, and there, two years later, met Joseph Addison a few weeks his junior, with whom his name will always be associated. In 1690 he matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, changing in 1691 to Merton College. His first writing there, a comedy, he burned. He left without a degree to enroll as a gentleman trooper in the life guards under the Duke of Ormonde's grandson (later attainted for treason)an action which cost him his uncle's approval and a large estate. In 1694 he dedicated an elegy on Queen Mary to Lord Cutts, and in consequence was appointed Cutts' secretary and transferred to his Coldstream regiment. By 1700 he was a captain. It was at this period that he fought a duel with one Captain Kelly, wounding him badly, an episode which turned Steele into a lifelong opponent of dueling. In 1702 he was in Lord Lucas' regiment. This was also the period when Steele began to appear in print. His
