The Crock of Gold The title " Crock of Gold " likely comes from the novel by Irish poet and writer James Stephens (1882-1950). If you're interested in the work, the link provides the complete text; if you need some further encouragement besides Shane's recommendation before diving in, try this review
Paddy Rolling Ston e Shane "borrows" the melody for this one from Hoyt Axton's "Lightning Bar Blues," originally released on his "Joy to the World" lp (1971; thanks Tommy for the heads up). Click here to open a window with the full lyrics. "They let me out the funny farm
Just to put me in the nick..." Not sure if this needs to be noted, but the "funny farm" would refer to a mental institution. To be put "in the nick" would mean to be incarcerated. "Then they let me outta the hole
Just to crush me on the dole..." "The hole" is prison slang for solitary confinement. In the UK, to be "on the dole" would be akin to being on welfare here in the States (or at least what's left of welfare since Clinton and the Republican b*stards who control Congress removed most of the safety net). "It was on the 23rd of June
As I lay blasted in my room
A small bird sang on an ivy branch
And the song he sang was the jug of punch..."

Stephens, James. Traditional Irish Fairy Tales
Trade paperback reprint 1920 British hardcover (as Irish Fairy Tales
Apr 1999.
A marvelous storyteller steeped in Irish lore, Irish poet and novelist James Stephens (1882-1950) was an ardent student of Gaelic language and culture, noted for his imaginative retellings of traditional Irish fairy tales.
The present collection contains ten of these charming, time-honored tales. Brought vividly to life by Arthur Rackham's wonderfully atmospheric drawings . . .
Brimming with enchantment, whimsy and sly humor that characterize Celtic storytelling, these charming tales will captivate today's lovers of folklore as much as they entertained readers when the book was first published over 75 years ago.

Good Thinking Quotes
"If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor inn the other direction." Dietrich Bonhoeffer "I think we too often make choices based on the safety of cynicism, and what we're lead to is a life not fully lived. Cynicism is fear, and it's worse than fear - it's active disengagement." Ken Burns, Historian "I don't think you can get away with putting your talents in a toilet bowl and not having them flushed away. Forever. There is a level of murder of one's soul and of the culture that they're supposed to be feeding vitamins to..." Sean Penn, from an interview in Details Magazine "The interesting thing is that there are so few important decisions. You don't have to go in the "right" direction. You don't have to enter the "right" business. What you have to do is have made a decision as to what you're going to do and then you just have to figure out how to succeed at it. Ken Oshman
"Fifteen referees. I want fifteen referees to be at this fight because there ain't no one man who can keep up with the pace I'm gonna set except me. There's not a man alive who can whup me. I'm too fast. I'm too smart. I'm too pretty. I should be a postage stamp. That's the only way I'll ever get licked."

Program Notes
Cultural diversity has been a hallmark of the United States since its beginnings. And the broad range of the music our country has produced from its earliest days reflects this rich palette of ethnic and cultural influences. The program we offer tonight merely skims the surface of this "melting pot," yet it affords a glimpse of a number of stylistic divergences and resonances. Irving Fine's small but precious legacy of compositions is one of the real treasures of American music. Its shameful neglect for many years now seems to be abating. Few other American composers so felicitously combine an almost Ravel-like delicacy and love of detail and craft with a real "American-sounding" harmonic syntax and gift for melody. A revered teacher at Harvard and later at Brandeis, Fine's life was tragically brief. He died unexpectedly in his 48th year, on the brink of an important breakthrough to the world's symphonic stage with his masterful
