Laurence Sterne
English humorist, was the son of Roger Sterne, an English officer, and great-grandson of an archbishop of York. Nearly all our information about the first forty-six years of his life before he became famous as the author of Tristram Shandy
Sutton was Sterne's residence for twenty uneventful years. He kept up an intimacy which had begun at Cambridge with John Hall-Stevenson (1718 - 1785), a witty and accomplished epicurean, owner of Skelton Hall ("Crazy Castle") in the Cleveland district of Yorkshire. Skelton Hall is nearly 40 m. from Sutton, but Sterne, in spite of his double duties, seems to have been a frequent visitor there, and to have found in his not too strait-laced friend a highly congenial companion. Sterne is said to have never formally become a member of the circle of gay squires and clerics at Skelton known as the "Demoniacks"; but no doubt he shared their festivities. Stevenson's various occasional sallies in verse and prose - his Fables for Grown Gentlemen (1761 - 1770), his

The Oates collection
This collection has about 600 editions of the works of Laurence Sterne, together with imitations and other Sterneana, collected by John Claude Trewinard Oates (1912-1990). Oates was mainly concerned with editions prior to 1800, and was also interested in pre-1800 translations, American imprints, and Irish pirate copies. Oates worked in the Cambridge University Library, and was president of the Bibliographical Societies of London and Cambridge. He also published the library's Incunable catalogue in 1954, and the first volume of the history of the University Library in 1986. The image on the bottom left is a detail from the frontispiece of Laurence Sterne, 1713-1768. The life and opinions of Tristram Shandy, gentleman. References and further reading:

Rural voice ready to roar
by Gazette reporters BEACONS blazed across North and East Yorkshire as thousands of people heeded a clarion call to safeguard the countryside. Bonfires were lit and a rocket relay spread across the country as part of the Countryside Alliance's protest against the Government's lack of understanding of rural life. More than 100 farmers and hunt supporters gathered at a beacon organised by Saltersgate Farmers' hunt, which took place as part of the national demonstration. Farmer Stuart Warriner, who supplied the straw and fuel for the bonfire, said the level of support had been overwhelming. "We had over 100 people there and we were expecting maybe only about 40," he said. "I think it showed that everyone was thinking along the same lines." Joint master of the hunt Lee Cade took his family to the demonstration, including 11-month-old son Freddie. Mr Cade said: "We could see all the other beacons on the horizons all around - I think there were about six in the distance. "It was a good feeling with everyone there, and each time the rockets went up you could imagine who was there at the bonfires."

Storytelling and language
Language is an oral phenomenon.
Walter Ong, The Orality of Language, page 6. In all the wonderful worlds that writing opens, the spoken word still resides and lives. Written texts all have to related somehow, directly or indirectly to the world of sound, the natural habitat of language, to yield their meanings. "Reading a text" means converting it to sound, aloud or in the imagination, syllable-by-syllable in slow reading or sketchily in the rapid reading common to high technology cultures.
