His son, Major-General John B. Sterling (b. 1840), after entering the navy, went into the army, and had a distinguished career (wounded at Tel-el-Kebir in 1882), both as a soldier and as a writer on military subjects. J olin Sterling’s papers were entrusted to the joint care of Thomas Carlyle and Archdeacon Hare. Essays and Tales, by John Sterling collected and edited, with a memoir of his life, by Julius Charles Hare, appeared in 1848 in two volumes. So dissatisfied was Carlyk with the memoir that he resolved to give his own “ testimony about his friend, and his vivid Life (1851) has perpetuated the memory of Sterling more than any of the latter’s own writings. I wish either my father or my mother, or indeed both of them, as they were in duty both equally bound to it, had minded what they were about when they begot me; had they duly considered how much depended upon what they were then doing;that not only the production of a rational Being was concerned in it, but that possibly the happy formation and temperature of his body, perhaps his genius and the very cast of his mind;and, for aught they knew to the contrary, even the fortunes of his whole house might take their turn from the humours and dispositions which were then uppermost;Had they duly weighed and considered all this, and proceeded accordingly,I am verily persuaded that I should have made a quite different figure in the world, from that in which the reader is likely to see me. LAURENCE STERNE
(Clonmel 24 November 1713 - London 18 March 1768) LIFE: Son of an English officer and an Irish woman. After having finished grammar school he enters at the Jesus College in Cambridge where he has preference for the study of classics, Rabelais and French humorists as well as becomes enthusiastic about the philosophy of Locke. In 1738 he begins the ecclesiastical career in the Anglican Church and participates to the local political vicissitudes with polemical articles and letters. He spends the following 21 years of his life as Vicar in the Yorkshire, preaching eccentric sermons and dedicating more attentions to many other women than his wife, Elizabeth Lumley. In 1760 he moves to London where, despite the tuberculosis, lives an intensive and dissolute social life. The first two volumes of Tristam Shandy are published and these produce remarkable sensation for the originality of the literary style. For health reasons he begins travelling a lot, especially in France (Tolouse) and Italy. When he comes back to London he meets Elisabeth Draper, for which he will write, before his death, Letters from Yorick to Elisa SUGGESTED WORKS: The Life and Opinion of Tristam Shandy, 1759-1767

LAURENCE STERNE
