Jersey Evening Post, July 31, 1941. Every farm was an almost entirely self supporting institution. Things which could not be made at home, boots for example, were paid for in eggs or cider. The modern idea of farming for money was entirely unheard of. You farmed to produce what you and your family needed. The farmer kept a couple of oxen to draw his cart and plough a couple of cows for milk and butter, a fairly large flock of sheep, bred mainly for their wool and milk. His chief form of meat was pork. There were so many pigs in the island ...... Bear William E.

The marriage of Mr. Scroggin occurred in Ashland, Ore., and united him with Lydia W. Washburn, a native of Iowa. Two children now add to the happiness of the home, namely: Seymour Ralph and La Verne. Mr. Scroggin is a member of the Christian Church, and politically he adheres to the principles advocated in the platform of the Republican party. THOMAS C. STONEKING
HISTORY OF LINN COUNTY volume 2, page 688.

Thomas C. Stoneking acquired his education in the common schools and re-mained under the parental roof until he had reached the age of twenty-five years. He is the youngest of four sons, his brothers being: William, a resident of Oklahoma; James and John, of Linn county. All were trained in the work of the farm, so that when they started out to make their own way in the world they were prepared to meet the responsibilities which came to them.
Thomas C. Stoneking assisted his father until the age of twenty-five years, and at that period in his life he established a home of his own by his marriage to Miss Margaret Scott, who was born in Linn county in 1856, a daughter of James and Mahulda (Newton) Scott, the former a native of Ohio and the latter of Virginia. They came to Linn county in 1838 and established their home upon a farm. In 1853 Mr. Scott erected on his place a brick house, which is still standing, one of the old landmarks of this section of the state. Their family numbered six children, of whom all are still living. The father died in 1894 and the mother departed this life in 1900, both having reached an ad-vanced age.

Monash University Library
18 March to 10 June 1999
Introduction It is only in the 1920s, though, that Australian poetry becomes both distinctive and distinguished, principally in the work of John Shaw Neilson (1872-1942) and Kenneth Slessor (1901-71). To be sure, Slessor took a little time to shake off the cloying influence of Norman Lindsay; but with the appearance of Earth Visitors (1926) we can see his Romantic spirit expressing itself by way of a sharp realism. One of the most striking poems in this collection, ‘The Night Ride’, is an exemplary lyric of description and evocation, one whose appeal can be felt in the verse of Les Murray (1938-) and Robert Gray (1945-). An exquisite lyricist, Slessor was also to compose ‘Five Bells’ (1939) which remains our strongest long poem, its only serious competitor being ‘Eyre All Alone’ (1961) by Francis Webb (1925-73). To begin this exhibition of Australian poetry in the 1920s makes good sense, then. However, to restrict its contents only to those writers whose works have become canonical would have been a poverty. Collections by poets the stature of David Campbell, A. D. Hope, Gwen Harwood and Judith Wright are readily available in bookshops and reading libraries. Unavailable outside research libraries, yet endlessly fascinating, are the many ephemeral and fugitive publications that evoke the contexts in which these and other poets lived and wrote. This exhibition does not try to reconstitute these contexts, only to give a sense of them. Those who wish to explore the holdings of Australian poetry in the Rare Books Room of Monash University Library have many months of intriguing research ahead of them.

A Finding List of Northern California Composers
A Finding List of Northern California Composers at the Art and Music Center in the San Francisco Public Library is a listing of composers active in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Northern California since the 1840s. All names included may be found in previous dictionaries and directories, published and unpublished, from 1934 to the present. Each entry gives birth and death dates, when available, as well an abbreviated citation for further biographical information. If there is further information about a composer on the Internet, a link to that site is provided as well. Because the some citations are 35+ years old, many listings do not include death dates. This listing continues to grow. Biographical Sources Used Search for composer by the first letter of the last name. [A] [B] [C] [D] ...
