Robert L. Stevenson author of fiction works that have become legendary in children's literature.
Source : LiteratureClassics.com Editorial Team
Scottish essayist, poet and author of fiction and travel books, known especially for his novels of adventure. Characteristic for Stevenson's novels is skillful use of horror and supernatural elements. Often his stories are set in colorful locations, where his characters can forget the restrictions of Victorian social manners. Arguing against realism, Stevenson underlined the "nameless longings of the reader", the desire for experience.

Robert Louis Stevenson:
"Tusitala" 1850-1894
By Barbara Smith Parents should know their children's friends - including favorite authors. Robert Louis Stevenson is one literary companion we may think we know because his books, Treasure Island Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Kidnaped The Black Arrow , or The Master of Ballantrae , introduced many of us to thrilling romance adventures. He was a matchless imaginative writer, and A Child's Garden of Verses lead many of us to love poetry, and we enjoy introducing our children to the engaging verses that capture a child's opinion of the world. He was a versatile writer in fiction, essay, poetry and drama, believing that romance was a necessary element in life, and that fiction was as necessary to grown people as play to children. For Stevenson, the highest point of romance to him was fine conduct, springing from loyalty and a sense of duty. ( British Poetry and Prose: A Book of Readings The literary world affectionately remembers Robert Louis Stevenson as a man who never grew up, and his verses reveal a child's attitudes. He wrote sympathetically in A Child's Garden of Verses in 1885: "When I am grown to man's estate
I shall be very proud and great
And tell the other girls and boys Not to meddle with my toys."

Robert Louis Stevenson Born Nov. 13, 1850 Died Dec. 3, 1894
R obert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was a prosperous civil engineer, and the boy showed interest in that profession. Later, however, he decided to study law instead. Stevenson attended the University of Edinburgh and was admitted to the bar in 1875. But he was more interested in writing. and in 1878 he published An Inland Voyage which described a canoe trip through France and Belgium.
In 1876, Stevenson met and fell in love with Mrs. Fanny Osbourne. Three years later, he learned that she was ill in San Francisco, and decided to go see her. He traveled as a steerage passenger and crossed the United States in the immigrant train.
After he arrived in San Francisco, Stevenson married Mrs. Osbourne. After a few months, he returned to Scotland with his wife and his new son, Lloyd. In 1879, Stevenson wrote two stories, The Amateur Emigrant and Across the Plains , which made use of his travel experiences in the U.S. The following years were wandering ones for Stevenson, spent in a long effort to find health. Yet in spite of his poor health, Stevenson wrote two collections of delightful essays between 1880 and 1888. These were Virginibus Puerisque (1881) and Familiar Studies of Men and Books (1882) . He also wrote a volume of fanciful and entertaining stories

These travels, which took him to many exotic locales, including the South Seas, greatly influenced his writings. Hence, we have his classic children's novels full of adventure and mayhem in distant lands.
These editions are illustrated by watercolorist N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945), one of the most prestigious illustrators of the early twentieth century. A student of Howard Pyle, Wyeth's work comes to life through skillful use of color and lighting. His paintings for Treasure Island are considered to be among his finest.

    Biography
Robert Lewis (later Louis) Balfour Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850. His father was an engineer. At the age of 17, he began studying engineering at Edinburgh University, as his father hoped he would follow in his footsteps. He then switched to studying law, but decided by the age of 25 that he was sure he wanted to be a writer. He left Scotland and began traveling, mostly around France. Many of his earliest published works were based on his experiences while traveling, such as An Inland Voyage , describing an adventure by canoe. At the age of 25, he met Fanny Osborne, an older American woman in France, whom he eventually married. Stevenson then moved to California, where he wrote more about his time in America. He began writing fictional novels, as well as magazine articles and various other genres. He eventually traveled to the Pacific, where he settled in Samoa with his wife and family. He suffered from bad health most of his life, and eventually died in 1894.
