Stewarton
East Ayrshire
Situated on the Annick Water 5 miles (8 km) north of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, the town of Stewarton developed from the 16th Century, specialising in the manufacture of bonnets and 'regimental headgear', particularly Tam o'Shanter bonnets, which earned it the nickname ' The Bonnet Town '. From the 19th century, it produced other textiles such as woollens, lace and hosiery; Stewarton has also engaged in engineering and copper production. The industrialist David Dale (1739 - 1840) was born in Stewarton, and there is a railway station in the village.

    PARISH OF STEWARTON
PRESBYTERY OF IRVINE, SYNOD OF GLASGOW AND AYR
THE REV. CHARLES BANNATYNE STEVEN, MINISTER.
1,- Topography and Natural History Name and Boundaries.- The name is evidently formed from the surname Stewart, first used as a family distinction by Walter II., in 1204. The district of Cuninghame, with others in the county, being the property of the Crown, was from time to time vested in the hands of some powerful family, and Stewarton, among others, being created into a separate lordship. becoming the inheritance of James, High Steward, in 1283.In the account of the charters granted by Robert I,, II., and III., there is one by Robert III. to John Stewart Earl of Buchan, the Regent's son and Elizabeth de Douglas, his spouse, daughter to Archibald Earl of Douglas, of the lands of Stewarton, and Armsheugh and Dunlop, in Cuninghame, on the resignation of the Earl of Douglas. This parish is situated in the district of Cuninghame, and is bounded by the parishes of Neilston and Mearns in Renfrewshire-on the North-east; Fenwick, on the east and south-east;Dreghorn, on the south; Irvine and Kilwinning, on the west; and Dunlop, on the north- west and north. It's greatest length is nearly ten miles from east to west; it's breadth from south to north varies from four to three miles; it contains twenty square miles. Topographical Appearances.-

    Stewarton Octagonal Bee Hive
Designed in 1819, Robert Kerr's Stewarton hive was octagonal. He lived in Stewarton, Ayreshire and the name is derived from that.
Octagonal hives were not a new idea... The octagon is not far different from a circle and both circular skeps and wicker basket style hives had been in use for many centuries. Notable among those were William Mewe, John Gedde, Christopher Wren and Robert Hook
The boxes that were used to make up this type of hive were in two basic depths:- Although the terms 'brood box' and 'super' were not used at the time, for simplicity I use them here.
The boxes used for brood were nominally 7" (178 mm) or 8" (203 mm) in height. Whilst shallow boxes of nominally 4" (100 mm) were used for honey storage. Slide bars These were rebated to allow permanent retention, its is also probable that in the original equipment the slides would not be interchangeable. The modern production of these is accurate enough for complete interchangeability... If that was ever necessary.

On a ridge near Stewarton stands a very unusual triangular arrangement of huge stones. These are a modern construction, dating back only a few years to when the nearby housing scheme was built. Very nice, but don't mistake them for something ancient!

Stewarton Bonnet Guild Chess Allegro 1998
Organised by Stewarton Chess Club in Association with Stewarton Bonnet Guild Held on Sunday 7th June 1998 in the Institute Hall, Stewarton The attendance at this year's event was slightly down on previous years with 84 players attending the tournament. Over half the players were from Ayrshire clubs with other players from as far afield as Inverness, Aberdeen and Bradford in England. This chess tournament is held as one of the events held during the Bonnet Guild gala week in the Ayrshire town of Stewarton. The Bonnet Guild week traces its roots back to the town's long history of association with the production of Stewarton Bonnets which are similar to berets but usually have a tassle or pom-pom on top. The Open section of the tournament was won outright by Kenny Malkin from Kilmarnock and he holds the Bonnet Guild Chess trophy for one year as well as keeping the presentation shield (and of course the prize money). Stewarton Chess Club would like to thank John Broadhurst and the other officials from the Bonnet Guild committee for their assistance in setting up and running the tournament this year and our sincere thanks to local company McCluskey Brown who donated all the trophies, shields and medals awarded during the prizegiving The organisers of the event would like to thank the controllers who have supported the tournament for many years with their help and skills in running the events. Thanks to John McNicoll of Kilmarnock Chess Club , Steven Taylor of Greenwood Chess Club and Alan Steel of our own Stewarton Chess Club. The ladies of the canteen / tuck shop outdid themselves with their home baking and excellet selection of hot and cold food (Bunty Montgomery, Maryann Cowie, Audrey McAngus). Thanks are also due to Sam and Laura Collins of Chess and Bridge Supplies (Scotland) for running a bookstall at the venue.

THE POPULAR BELIEF IS THAT THE TOWN-NAME, 'STEWARTON', IS DERIVED FROM THE HIGH STEWARD OF SCOTLAND; 'STEWARD' SUBSEQUENTLY BECAME 'STEWART' - WHICH GAVE THE ROYAL FAMILY ITS DISTINGUISHED NAME. [Picture Here] [Comment Here] A Dry Town For over 40 years, Stewarton was a 'dry' town, after having previously 'hosted' no less than 17 taverns and 3 inns!. In 1917, Stewarton Town Council submitted the following motion to Parliament: "That this Council resolves to intimate to the prime minister and members of the Government that we are firmly convinced that it is only by prohibition of intoxicating liquors, during the war and after demobilisation, that the highest efficiency can he ensured and the welfare of the nation be promoted to the utmost." Just two years later, in November 1919, under the Temperance (Scotland) Act 1913, a poll decided that no alcoholic beverages could be sold in the town: the decision took effect in May 1920 when, almost overnight, the town's many publicans had to discover other ways to make their living.

Glasgow International Airport, and Prestwick Airport, are short drives from Stewarton at 15 miles, and 10 miles distant, respectively. Once a busy crossroads-thoroughfare, the town is now largely bypassed by the main volume of north / south traffic but nevertheless, enjoys reasonable links to the main roads-network, with the nearby M77 only minutes away.
Stewarton is also well-served by public transport: a frequent railway service operates to and from Kilmamock and Glasgow, whilst Kilmamock and Irvine are also served by frequent buses from Stewarton; additionally, a small bus covers the local town-area with the 'Wee Buzzer' service.
